The Milwaukee Fire Department responded to a fire in the Furniture Depot store at 2523 West Lincoln Avenue on Milwaukee’s south side on Saturday, April 13th.When firefighters arrived on scene, they found the front of the store engulfed in flames. A second alarm was called before being elevated to a third alarm.The fire completely destroyed the store and damaged nearby businesses and a home.

Milwaukee FD Engine 9 requested a full assignment for a brush fire Monday afternoon (3-25-2019) at Havenwoods State Forest on Milwaukee’s northwest side. Additional assistance was requested from North Shore Fire-Rescue, Mequon, and Menomonee Falls fire departments. The fire burned approximately 3 acres. The Milwaukee Fire Department does not have any brush trucks in its fleet.

Firefighters battled a 2-alarm fire for several hours on Saturday, August 18th at Family Dollar in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The fire was reported around 3:45 PM at the corner of Hampton Avenue and Teutonia Avenue. The building had a bowstring truss roof. Firefighters from the Milwaukee Fire Department and neighboring North Shore Fire Rescue responded.
Milwaukee Police took one person into custody in connection with the fire.

With his crews stretched by major fires this week, Milwaukee Fire Chief Mark Rohlfing says he’s recommending deeper cuts to the department’s 2019 budget.
Rohlfing told the Common Council’s Public Safety committee that he’s preparing to eliminate one engine and the 15 positions that go with it. The department must find at least $1.1 million in savings. The proposed cuts for 2019 come on top of reductions in previous years, including the closing of six firehouses since last year. The head of the firefighters union said the closures were hurting response times.
Rohlfing responded to firefighters’ union president Mike Bongiorno, who said in two recent apartment fires, the Milwaukee Fire Department fell short of a national standard for response times. In one case, an apartment fire near North 39th and West Hopkins streets, witnesses said tenants had to jump from the building to escape the smoke and flames. The department had 21 people on scene eight minutes after the fire call, short of the national standard of 27 people, Bongiorno said.
Rohlfing said that Milwaukee doesn’t have a problem with response times, despite station closures and personnel cuts. His budget proposal will be reviewed over the coming months before it goes to the Milwaukee Common Council in the fall. At the end of Thursday’s committee meeting, city budget director Dennis Yaccarino said there would also be cuts to the Milwaukee Police Department.

For the first time in a decade the Milwaukee Fire Department is recruiting applicants for firefighter positions, despite cuts outlined in the mayor’s budget.
The last time Milwaukee fire accepted applications for firefighter positions was 2007. Over the years when jobs open the Fire and Police Commission go to the list created at that time. Recruiter Kischa Buford said the commission exhausted the list so it’s time for a new one.
There is no age limit, but applicants have to be 18 to apply, a U.S. Citizen, and possess no felony convictions plus a high school diploma or equivalent.
“We really are looking for great people who are going to be great neighbors and great representatives of the fire department and in turn make great public servants,” said Milwaukee Fire Captain Joshua Parish.
The city of Milwaukee is set to close six fire stations as part of the mayor’s 2018 budget. There are no layoffs involved, but 75 department vacancies will not be filled. Parish said the department still needs firefighters.
It’s now a waiting game for hopeful applicants.

The 16th Great Milwaukee Fire Muster was held Saturday, June 27th at Milwaukee Area Technical College’s Oak Creek campus. Antique and present-day firefighting apparatus was on display including Milwaukee Fire Department’s Special Teams (Dive, HAZMAT, Structural Collapse). There were emergency service demonstrations and a flea market. A Flight for Life helicopter made an appearance in the morning.
The event was held in conjunction with the Wisconsin State Fire Chiefs’ convention.
