Box Alarm fire in Sycamore, 9-5-20

This from Art Zern:

Sycamore fire was dispatched to a General Alarm just before midnight Saturday 9/5/20 for a structure fire.  Engine 1 and Chief 3 arrived to find a two-story duplex with heavy fire on the C and D sides extending into both floors and the attic.  E-1 stretched a 2 ½” to the C/D corner to knock down the bulk of the fire that had started on the deck and extended via the vinyl siding.  E-2 arrived and assisted in securing positive water and extended a second line to the second floor for extinguishment and to pull walls and ceilings.  All occupants had escaped prior to arrival. C-3 boxed the fire because several General Alarm companies were not available or delayed.  Good stop by E-1 and E-2.  Dekalb T-1 handled roof ops and other companies conducted extensive overhaul, checked the other unit for extension, and handled RIT duties.  Many thanks to our mutual aid partners.

2nd structure fire in the last 8 days, this time a nice stop by Gold Shift crews!

This is the press release from fire on early Sunday morning-

On Saturday September 05, 2020 approximately 2358 hrs, the Sycamore Fire Department was dispatched to 660 Hill Street for a reported structure fire. Upon arrival, initial fire companies found heavy fire from the rear deck area of a residential structure extending vertically into the attic space. Initially crews attacked the fire from the exterior with a large 2 ½” hand line and when the fire was knocked down, began an aggressive, interior fire attack with 1 ¾” hand lines and began a primary search for occupants. Fire companies made a quick knock down of the fire and had the fire under control in about 30 minutes. Fire companies remained on scene for an hour and a half performing overhaul and checking for fire extension.

The Sycamore Fire Department was assisted by DeKalb, Genoa-Kingston, Elburn, Malta, Kirkland, Somonauk, Maple Park, Burlington Fire Departments. Also assisting were Sycamore Police Department, Com-ed and NICOR.

There were no injuries to residents or firefighters. The roof structure is severely damaged from flame and heat. The 2nd floor level was heavily damaged from heat, smoke, and water damage. The first floor and basement level is damaged from smoke and water. The loss from the fire is estimated at approximately $150,000.00. The building is not habitable and all residents were relocated.

The cause of the fire is currently listed as undetermined, pending further investigation.

Quick initial knockdown with DeKalb T-1 put to work due to structural issues. Gas fed fire on B-side going until Nicor arrived to dig and D/C the gas.  General alarm fire with Cortland and GK engines, Hampshire Truck, and COQ companies. From the Sycamore FD Facebook page:

Late last night into early this morning, the fire department was called to the 1300 block of Janet Street for a reported structure fire.

First arriving fire crews found heavy fire engulfing the majority of the structure and initiated a quick defensive attack using a master stream device with tank water carried on the engine. The bulk of the fire was brought under control in approximately 60 minutes. A natural gas fuel fed fire involving the gas meter was kept in check by fire crews until a NICOR work crew were able to locate and shut off fuel to the meter. Fire crews remained on scene for approximately two more hours doing overhaul operations.

A great job by the initial arriving fire companies to knock down an overwhelming fire along with valuable assistance provided by our mutual aid partners.

There were no injuries to firefighters or residents. Two individuals were evaluated by an ambulance crew on scene and refused treatment or transport to the hospital. The initial estimate of damages from the fire at 1319 Janet Street are approximated to be $300,000 to structure and contents. Heat from the fire damaged a neighboring house at 1311 Janet Street. The initial estimate of damages at that property are approximately $50,000 to the structure.

The fire went to the general alarm level and assistance was received from several neighboring fire departments including DeKalb, Elburn, Genoa, Hampshire, Burlington, Cortland, Pingree Grove, and Hampshire. The Sycamore police and public works department also assisted along with Nicor and ComEd.

The cause of the fire is undetermined pending further investigation.

from DeKane Scanner Incidents

This from Art Zern:

Here’s a pre-arrival pic of the “mulch” fire we had yesterday afternoon about 1500 hours.   Presented with heavy fire on three sides, SFD Engine 1 made a great hit on this one. Fire extended to the first floor front, attic and second floor.  See link for info on the first fire of the day, an old barn on Glidden Rd.

Thanks,

Art

Update on Monday afternoons house fire in sycamore.

Sycamore fire was dispatched just after 3pm for reports of a brush fire on the 400 block of Mary Ann Cir in Reston Ponds. Syc Bursh-1 confirms the front porch is on fire at 3.15pm.

Call was upgraded to a General Box Alarm 10-1

Cortland fire was dispatched with an ambulance for a patient with burns to the hand.

Fire was contained in under 40mins. All occupants made it out safely with the exception of some hand burns.

Mutail aid companies
DeKalb, Cortland, Genoa-Kingston Fire & Rescue, Hampshire, Elburn & Burlington.

Excerpts from the Daily-chronicle.com:

Multiple fire departments responded about 3:30 p.m. to a blaze at 401 Mary Ann Circle in Sycamore, where a mulch fire spread to and rendered the house uninhabitable and damaged the neighboring house at 409 Mary Ann Circle. Firefighters got the blaze under control quickly, but the wind raised concerns about potential spread, with gust as much as 30 mph in DeKalb County.

Sycamore police said the homeowner burned her hand during the fire, but it was not severe enough to require hospitalization. No one else was hurt.  Mulch locks in moisture for plants and prevents weed growth, but when conditions get hot, dry, and windy, mulch becomes a prime source for fires.

The Cortland, DeKalb, Genoa-Kingston and Hampshire fire departments assisted.

House fire in Sycamore, 10-26-16

This from Art Zern:

See the attached photos from the Daily Chronicle.  Frame two story “Collyers Mansion” fire on 10/26/16.  General Alarm fire with lots of work from exterior due interior conditions and only room for three on the second floor at a time.  Nice stop all things considered.

Excerpts from the Daily-Chronicle.com and here:

Firefighters were called to 974 W. State St., in Sycamore, on Wednesday evening after a neighbor reported seeing smoke. When crews arrived, smoke could be seen coming from the attic of the two-story home, Sycamore Fire Chief Pete Polarek said. Firefighters were able to get the fire under control in about 30 minutes.

The residents were already outside of the home by the time firefighters arrived at the house. No injuries were reported. The fire caused about $40,000 in damages to the home.

Homeowner Larry Smith, 61, who lived there with his wife, and son, said they had been remodeling the home. Two weeks ago they had finished the roof and put up new windows, he said. He didn’t know what caused the fire that appears to have started in the area of a second-floor bedroom and hallway, or where the family would stay the night. Damage from the fire, smoke and water left the home uninhabitable.

No one was injured in the fire and the Sycamore Fire Department was assisted by crews from DeKalb, Cortland, Hinckley, and Genoa.
