New fire chief for the Hebron-Alden-Greenwood FPD

Excerpts from MySuburbanLife.com:

The Hebron-Alden-Greenwood Fire Protection District will have a new chief May 1. Thomas Linneman was appointed by the district’s board of trustees last week and will be moving up from his current role as assistant chief to oversee the 30 firefighters, emergency medical technicians, and paramedics in the department.

The 33-year-old is a lifelong Hebron resident and started with the department as an explorer, he said. In 2000, he became an EMT and worked his way up the ranks. He also works for the Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department as a firefighter/paramedic.

Eventually, Linneman said he hopes to bring back the district’s explorer post to develop young firefighters. He said the program dissolved the past few years because of a lack of interest.

Chief Scott Mullis said he is resigning from his position to spend more time with his family and explore working more in the private sector. He’s been the chief for almost five years, and also works as a full-time firefighter at the Hoffman Estates Fire Department.

Mullis said Linneman was the natural choice for the chief position, and he’s a good decision-maker who is well-respected by the community and department.

“You can’t find a more dedicated bunch,” Mullis said of the Hebron-Alden-Greenwood Fire Protection District volunteers. “They come out and really do put their lives on the line, and they sacrifice their personal lives so they can basically take care of their town.”

Hoffman Estates firefighters get new contract

The Daily Herald has an article about a new contract for Hoffman Estates firefighters.

Hoffman Estates and its firefighters union Monday finally resolved their long dispute over the current three-year contract — with the added benefit of turning it into a harmonious six-year contract.

“That’s positive for everyone, and we did it without attorneys at the table,” Hoffman Estates Village Manager Jim Norris said.

Last summer, the union was awarded through arbitration a contract retroactive to Jan. 1, 2012, which stretched through Dec. 31, 2014. Village officials quickly appealed it. Their strongest disagreement with the contract — and the only change negotiated in the new one — was the arbiter’s granting 72 hours of unearned time off each year which could be used, accrued or cashed in. With 83 firefighters in the department, an additional 72 hours of time off was seen by village officials as a lot to schedule — or pay out.

The new agreement negotiates that down to 48 hours, with the understanding it must be used or cashed in during the same year it’s earned.

The unchanged part of the new contract still gives firefighters raises of 2.5 percent in 2012, none in 2013 and 2.5 percent in January 2014.

The new part of the contract grants a further 1 percent raise in March 2014, and 1 percent raises on Jan. 1 and June 1 of 2015, 2016 and 2017.

Union President Dean Slater said he, too, was pleased with the contract, adding that saving taxpayers pension costs was a priority throughout the negotiations.

thanks Dan

The Hoffman Estates village website also has information on the contract:

Village and Fire union reach settlement

Hoffman Estates, Ill., March 17, 2014 – The Village of Hoffman Estates and the Hoffman Estates Professional Firefighters Association Local 2061 union are pleased to announce the settlement of the most recent collective bargaining labor agreement. The previous contract expired on Dec. 31, 2011. The new agreement is effective Jan. 1, 2012, lasting through Dec. 31, 2017.

Most significant about this contract renewal is that it settles the pending appeal to the arbitration award filed by the Village in 2013. The parties continued negotiating during this appeal process and were able to reach a voluntary settlement resolving the outstanding issues. Union leadership understands the difficult economic times and its negative impact upon the Village budget, and they worked with the Village on the new contract terms. The highlights of this renewal contract include an extension of the term through Dec. 31, 2017. The union agreed to forgo a salary increase in 2013 and increases to health insurance contributions and benefit plan changes. The Village agreed to additional personal leave benefits and set wage increases through 2017 of one percent in March, 2014; one percent in Jan. 1 and July 1 for years 2015, 2016 and 2017. This settlement also resolves all outstanding grievances and unfair labor practices between the parties.

Hoffman Estates Mayor William D. McLeod stated, “While this agreement took time to reach, I want to thank both negotiating teams for working so hard to reach a mutual agreement by keeping the lines of communication open.”

Local 2061 Union President Dean Slater remarked, “The union membership wanted an agreement that served the membership while saving the Village and the taxpayers’ money. I want to thank the Village President and Board of Trustees for working with us to reach this agreement.”

thanks Dennis

Hoffman Estates house fire, 2-5-14

The Chicago Tribune has an article about a fully-involved house fire Wednesday in Hoffman Estates:

No one was injured when a Hoffman Estates home caught fire Wednesday afternoon, authorities said. Fire Chief Jeff Jorian said police arrived at the scene just before 2 p.m. to find the single-family house, on the 1000 block of Basswood St., engulfed in flames. The three adults in the home at the time escaped uninjured, including one who has a disability that requires a wheelchair, he said.  He said it appeared that the fire started in the garage before spreading to the ranch-style house. A resident in a nearby apartment complex called 911.

The fire left the home uninhabitable and caused some exterior damage to a home to the south, according to Jorian.

“There was a lot of smoke pretty quick with this one,” he said. “There’s fire damage through at least half of the house, but extensive smoke damage throughout.”

Schaumburg firefighters arrived on the scene first, Jorian said, because there was initially some confusion as to where the fire was located. The apartment complex of the resident who called 911 is in Schaumburg, he said. This is the third fire in that neighborhood in the past few years, Jorian said, though he called it a coincidence.

Hoffman Estates considers new alert system for fire department

This from Ron Wolkoff … the source is unclear:

Hoffman Estates firefighters may soon be benefiting from an improved alerting system and new mobile computers for five fire department vehicles.

While meeting as the public health and safety committee Monday, the Hoffman Estates village board reviewed a request to waive bidding and purchase $206,200 in new fire station alerting equipment for each of the village’s four fire stations.

The new equipment will replace systems that are more than 20 years old. It will match the master control panel that was installed in each station last year by the department’s dispatching center — Northwest Central Dispatch System — when it switched to a new computerized dispatch system.

Benefits of the new equipment include escalating tone signals and clear voice announcements, which will likely reduce cardiac stress and anxiety in firefighters and improve response time.

“Even before all the dispatch information is verbalized, there are scrolling screens and special lights on the ceiling that come on that inform members of the station that they’re going to be due to respond,” said Fire Chief Jeff Jorian.

The system is also equipped with an automatic power supply, ensuring emergency calls won’t be missed if the fire station experiences a power outage.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has awarded an Assistance to Firefighters Grant to the department that will cover 80 percent of the cost of the new equipment.

The village will cover the remaining 20 percent, with nearly $31,000 from reserves in the general fund and about $10,300 from reserves in the EDA administration fund.

In addition to the new alerting equipment, the board also reviewed a request to waive bidding and purchase $31,000 worth of new mobile work stations to be installed in a new fire engine that has yet to be purchased and four existing vehicles in the fleet. The current mobile computer equipment in the four existing vehicles was installed in 2007 and 2008.

The village’s 2013 operating budget contains funding for the purchase of the mobile work stations.

Final board approval for the purchase of the mobile work stations and the alerting system is scheduled for Monday, Dec. 2.
