Chicago Fire Department news

Excerpts from the ChicagoSunTimes.com:

A mayday alert was issued after a vacant apartment in the Gresham neighborhood went up in flames Friday morning, temporarily entrapping a Chicago firefighter and multiple squatters.

At 3:15 a.m., an abandoned duplex in the 7800 block of South Sangamon caught on fire after two women lit candles inside. The women, 38 and 41 years old, woke up to the apartment ablaze on its north side.

The mayday was declared when the second floor pancaked onto the first with the fire still ongoing. Firefighters were working on the second floor during the collapse, which trapped one in debris for about a minute, but he escaped with no injuries.

The two women were taken in good condition to St. Bernard Hospital for smoke inhalation. One had been taking up shelter inside the now-collapsed duplex, while the other lived next door. A 66-year-old man who resided in the vacant building was also displaced by the blaze, but he had left the residence prior to firefighters’ arrival.

No one was in custody early Friday as CFD investigated the fire.

Chicago Fire Department news

Excerpts from abc7chicago.com:

Three armed men broke into a home in the 5400-block of South Damen Avenue at about 11:45 p.m.on Saturday and displayed a weapon to a 33-year-old man who was sleeping, police said. A 56-year-old man, and a 29-year-old woman, and a 6-year-old girl were also in the home.

The robbers struck the older man in the face with a handgun. After attacking the man, the robbers stole property before pouring gasoline throughout the house and setting it on fire.

The 56-year-old man was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center in stable condition. Officers also initially believed the 56-year-old had been stabbed, but hospital staff later determined the man’s abdomen had been cut by glass.

None of the other people in the home were injured, and the 6-year-old girl did not witness any of the incident.

No one is in custody.

Still & Box Alarm fire in Chicago, 10-28-18

This from Eric Haak:

A very short Still & Box Alarm on Sunday afternoon (10/28). The fire was in a 1-story grocery store that was closed for the day. E127 landed first. The first picture was taken about 2 minutes before the box was requested. B16 reported that he had some fire in the basement with access issues. Needless to say, the Still and Box was not in very long.

Chicago Fire Department news

Excerpts from abc7chicago.com:

A 56-year-old woman was critically injured in a fire early Wednesday morning on Chicago’s South Side. She was trapped inside a smoky home in the 5600-block of South Racine Avenue. Firefighters spent about 40 minutes battling the fire in the single-family home, which caught fire just after 1 a.m.

Tyrone Powell escaped the fire. He said the woman who was critically hurt is his landlord. He said his grandkids were sleeping when the fire broke out and he was alerted to the danger when his daughter came knocking on the door. They were able to get all of the children out safely.
