South Holland Fire Department LODD FF/PM Dylan Cunningham (more)

Excerpts from kpcnews.com:

A crowd of hundreds congregated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Smits Funeral Home, where they paid respects to honor the memory of Dylan Cunningham, 29, a South Holland firefighter and paramedic who died last week.

The private service was officiated by South Holland Fire Department Chaplain Rev. Daniel Svendsen. Outside, rows of public servants, including local firefighters, police officers, U.S. Army veterans, and Illinois and Indiana Army National guardsmen surrounded the funeral home, standing by as Cunningham’s loved ones and dignitaries bade their final farewells.

Cunningham, the son of Rosemary and Patrick Cunningham, died Sept. 30 during an underwater dive training exercise at Haigh Quarry Lake in Kankakee. He was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago.

He had been with the South Holland Fire Department in a part-time role since 2011 and was sworn in full-time in 2018. He was also a paramedic, served in the Illinois Army National Guard, and was a member of the Associated Fire Fighters of Illinois (AFFI) Honor Guard Association and of the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) 24/27 Dive Team. In October 2018, Cunningham received a Gold Seal from the South Cook County EMS medical director for his work in saving a patient on an EMS call.

Cunningham graduated from Thornwood High School, where he was a multi-sport athlete. He earned a degree in fire science from Prairie State College, and then journeyed to Poland where he studied to become a chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear specialist for the Illinois National Guard. By the end of his service, Cunningham had earned the rank of sergeant and had served in a chemical operations and infantry unit.

Fire service news – Coronavirus COVID-19 (more)

Excerpts from ABC7Chicago.com:

A funeral was held Wednesday for Edward Singleton, the second Chicago firefighter to die from coronavirus complications. He passed away April 14 at age 55 and leaves behind a wife and two adult children.

While a traditional funeral service is not possible during these times, immediate family was allowed inside the funeral home while friends and fellow firefighters remained in their parked vehicles outside. A live stream allowed loved ones to join in mourning. Following the service, a procession accompanied Singleton’s hearse to Mt. Hope Cemetery.

As of today, 130 Chicago firefighters have been diagnosed with COVID-19.

Both Chicago Fire Department deaths were declared in the line-of-duty, so their families could access additional benefits.

Chicago Fire Department news

Excerpts from the ChicagoSunTimes.com:

Hundreds of Chicago Fire Department personnel and law enforcement officers stood more than 6 feet apart on North Pulaski Road and saluted Monday morning as the hearse carrying Firefighter Mario Araujo traveled to a Northwest Side cemetery.

Araujo’s funeral was attended by a limited number of family members. Hundreds of his colleagues and supporters waited outside the funeral home and eventually joined in the procession to Montrose Cemetery, where a brief ceremony, featuring bagpipes and a 21-gun salute, took place in front of the crematorium. Araujo’s mother was presented with the Chicago flag that draped her son’s casket.

Araujo, 49, joined the fire department in October 2003 and spent most of his career on Truck 25, which operates out of Engine 102’s house in Rogers Park. He died April 7 after a battle with the coronavirus. He is the first member of the fire department to die of COVID-19.

A GoFundMe has been set up to help John’s family cover the cost of funeral expenses.

Ret. Lt. John Schultz passed away at Delnor Hospital on Sunday, December 1st, leaving behind three children (a 14 year old daughter and 10 year old twin boys). John was only 49 years old and had been battling illness for many years. John’s family needs your help. Not only are they grieving the loss of their loving father, but they now share the financial hardship of laying John to rest.

John served as a Lieutenant for the Downers Grove Fire Department and was an active member with the Downers Grove Professional Firefighters Local 3234 from 2000-2013. John also served on the Union Executive Board, negotiations committee and was an Honor Guard member for the AFFI. During his time with Downers Grove, John was very accomplished in EMS and served as both the Designated Infection Control Offer and EMS Coordinator. He was passionate about the job and truly did everything he could to make the department better than when he started.

Prior to coming to Downers Grove, John worked for the Carol Stream Fire Protection District from 1994-2000, and served for 24 years with the Geneva Fire Department, which is where he started his fire service career. John was also an Instructor with the Downers Grove Fire Academy, Romeoville Fire Academy and previously taught at the College of DuPage.
