Paul – EQ2B sirens.
Dennis, you think they’re going to try a Type II Sprinter?

I recently visited Chicago, and my question is what type of siren are they using on the ambulances??? It sounds almost like the old Federal growler, but not perfect….

There’s also a number of EMS agencies that have been creating “safe” ambulances that are designed to reduce the need to be unbuckled while in motion, Cranberry Twp EMS in PA and Life EMS in Michigan both have profiles of them online.
I’m not saying that’s what they are but since the city hasn’t explained what the prototype ambulances will be that is a possibility.

In the next few months a pair of experimentation ambulances will be put into service to see how things work. Its in my opinion that they will be the sprinter van type ambulances but we shall see.

Bill the crimson ladders were awful. The jack spread and jacking system and then the computers for everything. I believe it was truck 51 who got the first one and it went back several times because of electrical issues. The layout and design seems nice, especially the hand pump storage but the apparatus overall seems not very well built.

Speaking of brand loyalty Chicago had been loyal to Luverne and Crimson until a little over a year ago when they decided to go with E/One. It will take several years however until all the Luverne and Crimson apparatus are replaced. I understand that Spartan didn’t even bid on the new multiyear contract for engines, trucks, and tower ladders. It seems that since Chicago purchased those 14 Spartan/Crimson ladders several years ago, things went south between the city and Spartan.

I think that cfd has a brush truck on the f550 chassis

Or like at church…”But we always did this way”.
So often times they will stick with one builder even if it’s crap just because.
If it works, fine but if not brand loyalty does no good.

Thanks for your input Crabby. I think one of most important points in ordering new ambulances or for that matter apparatus period is input from the people who are going to be using them on the street as opposed to only the bureaucrats or bean counters.

I was told directly by a CFD member earlier this year that the RAM chassis is “garbage”. That was the first word he said when I asked him how they like those.

larry why do u hate the pinwheel lights they aree full easier to see on a straight roads for almost a mile
as for the f series I think it is a better choice than the e series as for the rams I love them but if the city does not at least they got a truck chassis again I cant wait to see this
also does anyone know is ambo 20 in a ford again or is it just a spare

The 7 on the rear should be on the right door

The big reason Chicago went back to Ford F series is because they now have the gasoline engine instead of just diesel.

It’s about time! Now Chicago is getting back to the pickup truck ambulances again! But it’s disappointing that judging by the looks of the LEDs, the lights will flash pin wheel pattern again, which i hate. Finally where I live we get some good rigs nearby!

So i am guessing that the e-series and Dodge Ram experiments are over?

Michael, the 2014’s have already been replaced for the most part. The 2016 and 17 replacements now need to be replaced.

Looks like they went back to Ford. Hope it serves the city well. Are there any plans to get more? I am sure the 2014’s will need to be replaced soon.

Nice looking rig. Hopefully they got the right suspension this time with airbags to lower those thing so loading and unloading doesn’t destroy everyone’s back and it doesn’t bounce around enough to give the media’s whiplash.
