I can’t help but wonder if another reason why Hoffman Estates got rid of their squads is because they figured that if they needed a squad response they could ask their neighbor to east (Schaumburg) for mutual aid since they have Squad 55?

cmk is right. They sold Truck 24 the straight stick. They kept the Pierce tower ladder as a reserve. It was refurbed in 2013. They are getting rid of the brush truck because they hardly use it. It had basically become the primary vehicle for the fire investigator. Also, on the rare occasion it was used for an actual brush fire, it got stuck more often than not. It was poorly designed.

Hoffman Estates still has two aerial trucks, both of them are tower ladders. The Pierce is a reserve. They just got the Ferrara Tower last year. It was in a recent video that I saw on You Tube. The old straight-stick Truck 24 was up for sale at the same time both of the squads were. Anyone know if any of those three rigs were bought by other departments?

Also of note is that last year, Hoffman sold off truck 24. They now no longer have a reserve truck, with the Pierce truck 22 being their only aerial apparatus. This brush truck is the 4th vehicle they have disposed of in the last 12 months.

Mike–I was with Hoffman Estates EMA, but we meet at Station 22 because, at that time, FD oversaw EMA. I have/had always in firefighting, so I always asked a lot of questions, even did more than a few ride-alongs with them.
You are right about that station; it was a very odd situation. The squad, for the most part, joined up with either the engine or truck on fire or related calls.

CMK420 you worked for HE? That place is weird all the firehouses except 22 had 3 man fire companies and 2 man ambos. 22 has all 2 man companies. Some cities do silly things.

I was around when they first put Amb 22 in service; they were using Reserve Ambulance 23 when it started. They moved the reserve battalion vehicle to Station 23 when the ambulance was brought up. The rig configuration was engine, squad and truck in the front & ambulance, reserve squad and the Battalion Chief’s SUV in the back.
What I am curious about is the “why’ behind the sale of the brush truck. First, both of the squads are gone (which I know why from reading everything here), and in just over a year, the brush truck is being sold.
Thanks for the responses so far!

The brush truck was bought from an AFG grant award. They got this because they wanted it not because they needed it. As for the squads. A few years ago they put ambulance 22 in service as a new company and then took it back out of service. What’s funny is ambulance 22 is the busiest ambulance. They probably could have taken ambulance 23 out of service and just used palatine rural or Barrington countryside for an ambulance on that side of town.

I knew about why Hoffman got rid of the squads, from the article that was on here last year about it. It’s just kind of something that, within a year or so, they have sold both squads & now they are selling their brush truck. I am just wondering if it is just because they are not using it as much as they would have wanted (in which case, some department is going to get one heck of a used rig) or they need the money for something else.

I believe the reason they sold off the squads was to put an ambulance in service at Station 22. Also, the 2014 Ferrara engine is supposed to be a rescue pumper. The Ferrara tower has extrication equipment on it. They found a way to get rid of their squads and put an ambulance in service instead.

First, Hoffman Estates sold off both of their squads & now they are selling off their brush truck? For that vehicle be 15 years old & only have 10K miles on it says something. When I was there (in another capacity), it was hardly ever used, as it was never a manned vehicle. Guess they don’t need it anymore, or they need the money for something else??
BTW, anyone know who (if anyone) bought the squads? Thanks!
