This from Eric Biel:
I know there have been a few posts tracking the delivery of the new Chicago ambulances on the Ram 3500 chassis. The first of these appear to now be in service – Ambulance 31 is shop # C-252.Thanks,Eric Biel

The rumors are true! These look awesome. But I still hated that pin wheel pattern. What other ambulances are gonna get them?

As of Memorial Day weekend, Engine 11 was still in their HME/Luverne. I saw them operating at an alley garage.

So much for half the light head always being on the one on the front cabinet door is completely out and i think eng 11 is still in the HME

Bill what is engine 11 using

My understanding is the city chose the pinwheel flash pattern because half of each light head is always on, resulting in no “dead spots.”

Michael m the 5 new ambulance companies which are supposed to be numbers 76 through 80 haven’t been put in serive yet. They were supposed to be put in service by March.
It’s also been a while since any new ALS companies have been put in service as well. There are still some fire houses without an ALS company assigned to them. The ALS company program had first begun in around late 1997/ early 1998 which is when the HME/Luverne pumpers were being delivered to the CFD. I believe that there are only 2 of them left in front line service. Chicago had HME Luverne pumpers purchased and delivered in 1997, 98 and 99. The 1997 models were long wheel base models and the 1998 and 1999 models were short wheel base models with roll up cabinet doors on the sides of the rigs. The last two are in service at Engines 39 and 74 and are short wheel base models. Something like 60 out of 96 Engines are ALS and there are also 12 ALS truck companies in service out of 61 Truck companies.

Bob, I agree about the pin wheel lights! I don’t know if CFD specs it with that flash pattern or if that’s just how Wheeled Coach programs them. There are so many other flash patterns that seem to be more catching. Either way, it’s a very nice ambulance and I’m glad they are not using the Econoline chassis anymore. I think the Ram will accommodate the city better. Best wishes Chicago Fire with your new ambulances!

Michael M: They purchased 14. Only a few of them have hit the streets so far.

It’s too bad they still have those pin wheel lights

How many new ambulances did the city get? Did they ever put the 5 additional ambulances in service?
