Fatal fire in Chicago, 6-6-18

Excerpts from abc7chicago.com:

Chicago firefighters responded to a report of residents trapped by a fire at approximately 3:15 a.m. in a one-and-a-half story home at 11828 South Perry in West Pullman on the city’s far South Side Wednesday.

One resident jumped from a second floor window and two others evacuated.  79-year-old Jimmy Shearrill, who had difficulty walking, was trapped by the flames on the second floor. Fire officials said it was difficult to reach him because the staircase to the second floor was burned out. Shearrill was conscious when he was removed from the home but died later on the scene.

A Mayday call went out after a firefighter fell through the floor into the basement. He was treated at a local hospital and released.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Authorities say they have identified a suspect who may have set the fire but is not in custody.

Firefighters found 51-year-old Maria Silva on the pavement next to the building. She was pronounced dead at a hospital. A second person suffered from smoke inhalation and was taken to a hospital in fair to serious condition.

Off-duty firefighter killed in crash

Excerpts from nbcchicago.com:

A Chicago firefighter was among two people killed when police say the car he was traveling in collided with another vehicle on Interstate 57.  According to Illinois State Police, 55-year-old Brian Schofield, of Chicago, was killed in the two-car crash that also left another driver dead.

The accident happened when a Hyundai sedan collided with a Jeep head-on near 183rd Street. A preliminary investigation showed the Hyundai was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes at the time. The Hyundai struck a guardrail at a high-rate of speed and became engulfed in flames. Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.

Police noted that seatbelts were not used during the crash.
