Tom Sullivan is absolutely correct that battalion and district (division) numbers and response areas have changed several times during the history of the CFD. They have never been considered sacred like the company numbers.
If they really wanted to mess with tradition, they could go to a California style numbering system, with each firehouse company having the same number and the numbers in sequential order starting with district one.
Maybe they will renumber Squad 7 to Squad 3 and Squad 5 to Squad 11 (two squads in district 1) ?

Battalion 4 is getting the worst out of this debacle. It’s the only battalion headquarters which is located at the southernmost point in its battalion. Should not have been moved in the first place, but if so, the most logical place to put it would be Engine 18.

Hi, my husband is a firefighter in medway ohio. He has opened a store in new Carlisle ohio and it is called resue 1 custom vinyls. He is hoping to have a patch wall from fire departments all over the world. If you can help me surprise him, by flooding his work mailbox with patches that would be AMAZING!! His address is 412 N. Main Street. Suite 5 new Carlisle oh 45344
Thank you and god bless!!

Before the old 15th went OOS they were in E-107. The 15th had 3 house’s E-107/ T-12, E-23 FMS-4 Snk-5 , and E-26 / T-7, very busy Bn. The old 20th in E-83 had only 2 house’s E-83 / T-22 and E110 / FMS 6. The old 20 also very busy.

ok,,, let me say right up front this looks like change just to make change ,,make it look like the big bosses are doing something. there have been battalion, division, (districts) reorganizations many times over the last 150 years,, yes CFD has been around that long ! some no doubt made sense, some not.
in more recent years, back to the “brush fire bill” blair era of 1983 the big change was a complete bttn. renumbering and relocations around the city in ascending order,,1,2,3, etc.,, the word at the time was that this was California style,, all houses had to be in perfect numerical order. also rumor had it that blair wanted to renumber all the companies to match the house number,, e-1 & t-1 , e-2 & t-2 , e-3 &t-3,,,,etc. this would have really been an insult to the CFD !!! at that time the mayor,,(whose name we do speak of) had put people from outside the CFD in charge of many administrative projects, they had a big influence.
some bttns. had been out of service permanently & many bttns. at that time had an imbalance of houses,, I believe the “old” 15th had only 1,,others had 5 or 6 houses. also the old 7 divisions were realigned and renumbered to “districts”.
since then there have been several other smaller renumbering and / or relocations of bttns. & dists.
the question about the 13th bttn. the original 13th bttn, covered most of the north side at one time as, the city grew the 13th shrunk down to cover Webster av. to irving park, ,,lake front to western / clybourn av. roughly, that was primarly the lakeview neighborhood. the 1983 reorganization brought the 13th bttn to the west side,, basically the old 23rd and west half of old 18th bttn.
now it appears that the 18th bttn name ,,,,which had a spectacular run through the wild days of the 1960s’ and 70’s is back home !
personally speaking,,, I am sad to see the 13th move to O’Hare,,,i identified with the 13th bttn for many years going back to the lakeview days.
however,, in the end it is not all about the numbers,,, it is about the people of the CFD ( or any dept.) and the job they do ,, no matter where you work,, do your best, stay safe, stay low going in and stand tall when you come out !!

Dennis,
So the area that is now Battalion 13 was not always know as Battalion 13? What and when was it something different?
#9 by Michael M on June 5, 2015 - 10:06 PM
What are the current district Headquarters?
#10 by Dennis on June 5, 2015 - 9:50 PM
Jim, This will make it the 3rd time they have changed districts and battalions.
#11 by James on June 5, 2015 - 9:50 PM
This is the start of reducing overhead($$$) at the top but why screw with a number system that works. Nothing but a moral killer and get rid of tradition with the number changes! What a Shame to change the 13th Battalion number.
#12 by Dennis on June 5, 2015 - 9:43 PM
District 1 HQ will be at Engine 18
District 2 HQ will be at Engine 108
District 3 HQ will be at Engine 9
District 4 HQ will be at Engine 38
District 5 HQ will be at Engine 81
#13 by old timer on June 5, 2015 - 8:56 PM
I believe Battalion 13 used to be the 18th back in the day ( I could be wrong but it was something else at one time). All the battalions have been changed around through out the years.
#14 by John on June 5, 2015 - 7:47 PM
Engine 122 is too small of a house for District HQ. 121 or 72 are best bet.
#15 by Jim on June 5, 2015 - 7:43 PM
Was Battalion 13 always Battalion 13? Or was it something before the last change?
#16 by Josh on June 5, 2015 - 7:16 PM
What a disgrace for Battalion 13………
#17 by Chris S on June 5, 2015 - 6:30 PM
I would really like to see those maps

I hope they no longer schedule those early morning battalion chief group meetings at district headquarters. If they do, they will have some very interesting mornings on the south side with every chief either at Engine 18 or Engine 81. If they do still hold the meeetings, Chief Fox of special ops should tell 5-1-5 to head south as soon as relieved. Santiago and the rest should be willing to chip and pay for 5-1-5’s breakfast at a south side restaurant.
There must be a plan to move District 5 relatively soon, Engine 122 maybe? There has to be, right?
With the reduced number of Deputy District Chiefs, I am assuming the battalion chiefs will be told not to hesitate to ask for a 2-11, no one will second guess you.
Logic tells me the city will next try to negogiate eliminating one battalion per district with Local 2.
