Elmwood Park fire chief retires

Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:

On June 12, Elmwood Park Fire Chief Michael Ventura is leaving behind his hometown fire department.

For 33 years, he’s worked in the Elmwood Park Fire Department, three as chief. Now 57, Ventura is retiring his post as leader of Elmwood Park’s 26 firefighters and six paramedics.

His official letter of resignation was read and accepted at the June 1 Elmwood Park Village Board meeting. At the meeting, he received a plaque from the Village Board, along with a watch as a token of thanks for his years of service to the village.

Ventura got his start at the fire department in 1982, working part-time for three years before becoming full-time in 1985. He quickly rose up the department’s ranks, being promoted to deputy chief in 2009.

He takes satisfaction in the fact that the department is in a better state during his time as chief, but leaving will still be bittersweet.

Elmwood Park firefighter Mike Terzo said Ventura will be missed by him and his fellow firefighters.

Ventura said when he retires, he’ll focus on staying active. He believes it’s time for new blood at the chief’s position.
