Dennis McGuire, Jr. submitted several images of Engine 16’s new house.
While there, Dennis found something else:
I took this photo yesterday while at Engine 16’s new house. The building was never a firehouse, but the guy who owns it made it look like one. Supposedly he also owns a fire engine.

An interesting fact about Engine 16’s current station is that it was built for Engine 48 and Engine 16 didn’t move in until October 24, 1960 when Engine 16’s old station at 23 w 31st street was closed. Instead of taking Engine 16 out of service, Engine 48 was taken out of service on September 16 1965 (about 5 years after Engine 16 moved in) and the fire station at 4005 s Dearborn officially became Engine 16.
Another ironic twist is that in the original 1964 Maatman (consultant) report Engine 16 had been recommended to be moved in with Truck 16 at their old quarters at 1405 E 62nd Street and that Engine 48 should remain in service. Instead Engine 63 was moved into Truck 16’s quarters but not until about 5 years later on September 2nd 1969.

Kevin Engine 16 is supposed become the new Hazardous Materials company headquarters as well as for at the EMS south side division. Most if not all of the Haz Mat related companies from Engine 22’s quarters on the north side are supposed to be relocated there.

@Kevin Griffin, this day and age you cant build a firehouse just for what you have now, you have to look towards the future. This house will house Engine 16, Amb. 35, 5-1-1A, 5-1-1, 5-3-0, 5-1-11, 5-1-0, 4-4-12.

Beautiful house. I wonder what they will do with Engine 61’s old house when FDS moves. Are they still moving 5-1-1 there?

That “firehouse” adjacent to E16 shows up on Google Maps with an address of 4007 S. Wabash. The door hasn’t been painted red yet, but it has in stone “FIREHOUSE” over top of the “apparatus” door. The concrete out front is brand new and it looks as if the building has been rehabbed. Nice to see someone fix up a building and get it ready for occupancy in an otherwise desolate neighborhood.
