From Oak Forest firefighters union local 3039 Facebook:
Well, we have good news and bad news! Bad news first…we currently do NOT have any Oak Forest fire apparatus “in-service”.Our neighbors to the west, Village of Tinley Park Public Safety and Orland Fire Protection District, IL are each letting us use an engine to keep from a break in emergency services. The good news, we’re being told we have allocated funds and a thumbs up to purchase new fire apparatus! We are happy and hoping to move forward with that process as quickly as we can.
thanks Martin

Rj, I’d like to see your definition of “redundant, small mnicipality” and how a city of 27,000 qualifies as such.

RJ it’s poor planning on the mayors office. Oak Forest can afford it, the fire department is forgotten about. Only reason “funds were located” because of the pressure from the taxpayers. If oak Forest FD and union didn’t post to Facebook, a lot of people wouldn’t have known what was happening.
Also they have a fairly new engine that is oos. I am hoping they are getting something that’s available sooner than what Pierce offers. Most likely it will be a pierce, the department favors it.

This is an example of a redundant, small municipality fire department that should go away. If you can’t afford apparatus you should not exist. The taxpayers could save money and receive better coverage if this department was absorbed by surrounding departments and districts.

Steve D. the Oak Forest guys may have gone through the rigs before hand with Orland or Tinley. The Tinley engine is similar to the Pierce engines Oak Forest has and the Orland engine has a top mount pump panel which won’t take long to get used to.

My guess is they are going to have to go with a company like Alexis or HME. The smaller companies seem to be the only ones that don’t have a 3 or 4 year waitlist. I hope they will be allowed to purchase two engine and a truck.

Might be a silly question… But asking the folks who do this work daily. When a town like this loses its equipment does the receiving dept have to go through some type of walkthrough of the equipment that is being borrowed if different than what they have? It seems departments get training on new apparatus purchased, so curious if this practice is similar for borrowed equipment?
Thank you
