Does anyone going know what’s going on with engine 89’s house? Drove by yesterday and there was no one on duty.

Thanks for the information Chuck. I lived about equal distance between Engine 124s and Engine 89s house years ago. Technically speaking I was in 124’s still district. I remember when Engine 124 was sharing quarters with Engine 89 and Truck 56 was using Truck 38’s 1944 Pirsch Tillered Aerial Ladder from mid 1964 until mid 1965 when they open Engine 124s new house.. It’s hard to believe that Engine 124’s “new house” is 59 years old this year.

The truck is at Engine 79 and the ambulance is at Engine 124.

I just confirmed that Engine 89 has been operating from Engine 108’s house for the last several weeks. due to renovations taking place at Engine 89’s house. I don’t know where Truck 56 and Ambulance 46 is at. but as I said at least one of them is probably at Engine 79. There is a possibility that may be one of them could be at Engine 70 as even though Engine 70 has Engine 59 ,Truck 47 , Battalion 9 and Ambulance 13 there still may be some room for Ambulance 46 there. This is only a guess however. I know that Engine 94 was operating out Engine 108 due to renovations being done at 94’s house however I really don’t know if they are finished renovating Engine 94’s house yet.
This site did have copies of the General Orders of the temporary relocations of Engine 94, Engine 93 and Ambulance 60 which runs from Engine 93’s quarters but I haven’t seen anything about Engine 89, Truck 56 and Ambulance 46 as of yet.
Here is a video clip of Engine 89 responding from Engine 108’s house on 7/12/2024 thanks to “Metro Force”. I’m surprised that Engine 89 is at Engine 108 as they are over 3 miles away from Engine 89s house while Engine 79 is just over 2 miles away. I am guessing that Truck 56 and Ambulance 46 might be at Engine 79, maybe someone else knows?

Thanks for bringing up the question because I would like to know what is going with Engine 89s house myself. I go way way back with their house from at 1959 believe it or not That was the first fire station that I had witnessed them getting an alarm from when I was waiting across the street waiting for a bus with my mother and being that it was summer day the doors were open so I had heard the Joker Stand bell go off and I remember them running to the stand and ringing the house bell. Both Engine 89 and Truck 56 went out going west bound on Peterson. Engine 89 was using their 1953 FWD Engine and Truck 56 was using a 1942 Mack Tractor and a 1925 Trailer which had ground ladders hanging from hooks on the side of the rig. The Old wooden Aerial Ladder was inoperable and from what I understand it was permanently bolted down so it couldn’t be used at all.
I often see Ambulance 46 going past my building on it’s way to St Francis Hospital in Evanston.
I know that there are several Chicago Fire Stations that are current being physically rehabbed which are temporarily closed which includes Engine 94 at Grace and Menard and Engine 93 on the Far South Side at 104th street and Harvard however I had no idea that Engine 89 is now closed. If they are closed for more than just a day or two I would guess that they most likely would be relocated to Engine 79s house as that is the nearest station to them that has some room for apparatus.. Engine 71 is the nearest house to Engine 89 but they have no room at all.

All i know is that it is undergoing extensive renovations resulting in Engine 89 being temporarily relocated to Engine 108 for the time being.
