Is Rockford tracking calls differently from Aurora? The numbers are quite staggering! Aurora has a lot of industrializing and business along with some major highways/roadways and they still have fewer calls than Rockford. Granted, Rockford does too. Rockford is averaging 90 calls per day while Aurora averages 64 calls per day. I guess the question I have is, why is Rockford getting so many more calls than Aurora? Are the numbers tracked differently or is the call volume that high?

I can’t speak for the others but Aurora goes through and gets rid of test calls and such to get true numbers. Each call generates 1 report number and we don’t count each vehicle added or patient added as additional calls. Mostly EMS for sure, probably around 80-85%.

Drew, along the same lines, there were a few departments that would count each victim of an auto accident with a run number. A crash with 5 victims got 5 different run numbers.

How calls are counted could also account for some differences. For example, is a crash with entrapment counted twice: once for the ambulance and once for fire company(s) response? I say this because years ago I knew more than one FD that did this for all calls. Also, while I don’t know of any Chicago area FDs that do this, on the east coast more than a few FDs count company responses (3 engines and 2 trucks to a reported fire would count as five).

I find the top 4 interesting. Aurora has around 170k residents, and the other 3 have about 150k each. It is pretty incredible the vast difference between all 4 compared to their populations. I know Rockford and Joliet are more depressed compared to Naperville, but the difference is still pretty large. I’m sure the vast majority are ambulance calls, but it would be interesting to see the breakdown between medical and fire related calls.
