From the Bedford Park FD Facebook page:
The year was 1960 and we were about to start a part of our history that would last for the next 63yrs! We were the first fire department to take delivery of a new type of truck, the Snorkel. We would have a few throughout the years that served, not only the residents of Bedford Park, but also surrounding departments! Earlier this week Truck “Snorkel” 705 was decommissioned and is currently making her long trek, roughly 5,000+ miles, to the country of Ukraine! There, Truck 705, will begin a new mission that is much bigger than us! We hope you take care of the citizens of Ukraine as you have for us over the last 63yrs! Thank you for the memories…
thanks Dennis and Rob

Austin the GMC sat outside in Bedford Park for many years with the intention of restoring it, sadly it never happened..When Smeal bought the Snorkel brand they took it to their plant with the intention of restoring it however it was too far gone to be restored

Love the photo of all 3 snorkels together! I am guessing they kept the 1960 snorkel until they got the Pierce? But

What a legacy! Three Snorkels, 60 plus years! I wonder why they decided to go with the Pierce Ascendent as opposed to having Rosenbauer build them another Snorkel? Was it just getting too expensive to operate a Snorkel? Was there a lot more maintenance involved with the Snorkel as opposed to a regular ladder?

John, was it just scrapped?

It’s a shame that the GMC Snorkel was not able to be restored.
