We’d like to invite you to the Tunnel to Towers Lake Zurich 5K Run/Walk on June 12th.

For the past five years our family has  been volunteering with the Tunnel to Towers Foundation.  We are police officers in the Lake Zurich area.

The foundation was started after 9/11 by the Siller family to honor and remember their brother Stephen who was assigned to FDNY Squad 1 in Brooklyn.  He had just finished his shift and was on his way to play golf with his brothers when he got word of a plane hitting the North Tower of the World Trade Center. Upon hearing the news, he returned to Squad 1 to get his gear.  Stephen drove his truck to the entrance of the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, but it had already been closed for security purposes. Determined to carry out his duty, he strapped 60 lbs. of gear to his back, and raced on foot through the tunnel to the Twin Towers, where he gave up his life while saving others.

His family started the foundation to remember Stephen’s sacrifice by helping veterans, police officers, firefighters, and EMS personnel.

The foundation builds smart homes for catastrophically injured veterans, pays off the mortgages for Gold Star families and those of fallen emergency personnel.   The foundation has assisted several families in Lake, Cook, and McHenry counties and is ranked four stars (the highest) by Charity Navigator.  Ninety-five percent of funds raised by the foundation go directly to the programs, an increase over ninety-three percent from last year.

We hope you will join us on June 12th at Paulus Park for our event!  There is a discounted rate for police, fire, and EMS personnel. The travel cup will be up for grabs to the fastest team of five.
