Bill I’m not sure what ” Other ” DG paint scheme you are talking about they have used Black over red since 1996 before that it was solid Red. The older Pierces and Ferrara had a longer body and were actually harder to maneuver in parts of town and subdivisions. The shorter wheelbase without the rollup pump panel and ALS midship compartment like the last 3 Pierces made them 3 feet longer than they needed to be. The benefit of this rig is it has a 750 tank all the others are 500. It is at Station 103 the only station north of the tracks and covers most of the tollway.

The Engine definitely seems to be shorter then most Downers Grove Engines that I have seen and it appears that it may have less cabinet space as most of the Downers Grove Engines that I have seen had to unpainted rollup door behind the Cab. I am assuming that this break with Downers Grove Tradition is because that the rig wasn’t built to Downers Grove usual Engine specs?
As far as the black over red goes I prefer the Old Downers Grove Paint scheme and the same goes for most other local fire departments. Too many of them are trying to look like Chicago and overall the Red or the White Over Red paint schemes looked pretty good on their fire apparatus. Quite a few fire departments had their own traditional color schemes which weren’t bad looking and now too many of them are trying to be copy cats.

Cicero did not reject the engine because it did not meet their needs. The money for the rig was stolen in a wire fraud scheme from within the town hall as the story goes. 2 individuals were arrested by the FBI Amazing how this was kept from the news media. As of today Cicero is trying to get a grant for a new engine. Good Luck They put a bad taste in the mouths of FEMA and Safer Grant Cicero was awarded 9 firefighters and only hired 3 or 4. Cicero is accepting applications til April 22, 2022 . You must be a certified Firefighter2 and a paraquake to test

Aidan – Do you have other details on why it didn’t suit Cicero’s needs?

This fire engine was originally a demo that was purchased by the Town of Cicero Fire Department but then they rejected it because it didn’t fit their needs so Downers Grove bought this unit. Cicero might buy new Engines soon from either Sutphen or Seagrave.

Classic and no nonsense looking. Like those black wheels and the red light in the nose.
