Not digging the long wheel base on a unit that has to maneuver around alot of congested shopping and rush hour traffic jams. But they know what works for them.

Yeah, I agree it is sketchy they couldn’t find a used tower, and I don’t believe they got any huge discount on the stock. It is also not a quint, unlike both of their previous towers.
The justification for the Squad was to reduce wear on Tower 22, which can make sense given the issues they’re having with it. I believe Tower 22 is staffed by 2, and the Squad is staffed by 2.
It seems like Ambulance 22 was only in service for peak hours or as staffing allowed prior to getting the new Squad. Getting that into full-time service seems like it’d be more important than staffing the Squad, particularly with the amount of EMS calls in District 22.
Another more solution could’ve been to staff the Tower with 3 and have 2 jump to the Squad for EMS and service calls and keep the Engineer with the Tower in case of a fire call. Then get Ambulance 22 into full-time service, but that would probably be staffing more positions than the powers that be would like to have.

I don’t think the Ferrara tower has been a reliable rig for Hoffman. In terms of the mechanics not liking Pierce it’s because they have so many proprietary parts on them. The only place to get them is Pierce! Proprietary parts drive up costs DRAMATICALLY and not as readily available.

This sounds a little fishy.. they couldn’t find a used truck or tower but they’re gonna spend 1.2 million on a mid mount. That sounds like a line of garbage. It would be interesting to find out the story on the squad too. Get rid of both them and put ambulance 22 in service, then all of a sudden they need a squad again. District 22 is normally the busiest ambulance district also. If they wanted both a squad and ambulance they should consider taking ambulance 23 out of service and work with palatine rural, Barrington and barrington countryside for ambulance coverage on the north side of town. Engine 23 is ALS already.

I’m surprised they couldn’t find a used one with their specs, but found a stock one that does, or maybe they’re just getting a hell of a price on the stock truck. I’m even more surprised they’re going with a mid-mount

Nice looking Ambulance! Why did they decide to put Squad 22 back in service instead of keeping Ambulance 22 in service? Interesting they are going back to Pierce and the 4 year old Ferrara needs so much work.

Ambulance 22 has been in-service very rarely since they brought back Squad 22. Between May and October, it has only been in service for 51.75 hours, according to the Fire Department’s monthly report to the Hoffman Estates Public Health and Safety Committee.
Also of interest from Hoffman Estates was the approval of a purchase order for a stock Pierce Velocity Ascendant 100′ Midmount (Pierce Job 33774), with delivery in Q1 2021. The current Reserve Tower 22 was deemed surplus after its aerial failed inspection, and Tower 22’s Ferrara needs warranty service lasting 3-5 months next year. They claim they couldn’t find a used Tower that met their specifications to use while Tower 22 is getting serviced, so they’re buying a whole new truck.

Thats what I said on the post Jon. I am just not sure if the chassis is a 2020 or 2021 since the 2021 International MV chassis has been out since June.

The rig says 21 on the rear compartment doors so my guess is it’s going to be 21.

You definitely will not see the VW logo on these trucks. But you may see a rebranded VW as a international.

Another example over the last few years of ambulances getting better colors than traditional white.
Don’t be surprised however if you start to see the VW logo on future NAVISTAR products both trucks and buses. Time will tell.

This is a great looking rig, nice to see the stuck with the same design as the last new on that went to 24. Harry I think 22 may get the next new one, 23 got the last new before they switched to this configuration. The one at 22 is pretty old, it used to be 21, but since 22 was rarely in service and 21 was running calls for both districts they swapped them. Then again who knows what they’ll do, they could give a new one to 23 and move the existing 23 to 22. Does anyone know if Ambulance 22 is in service everyday or if they are only running it when they have the manpower after bringing back the squad. My information source from that department retired and got the hell out of this state. Lastly, does anyone know what equipment they are storing in that roll up compartment directly behind the driver and passenger seats?
