Marty thanks for your input. I’m well aware of the cost difference in apparatus these days between engines and trucks. And since you mentioned the unique look of the P-80 Ward LaFrance…it began in a deli in New York City. Two of the Ward LaFrance design engineers were eating lunch in New York City when a Flxible New Look bus pulled up. It had a 4 piece windshield. That’s where the idea came from for that unique look those rigs had.

There is no question that the new Truck 81 really looks sharp. While it is not a Seagrave used by the CFD, this Spartan/LTI is in some ways closer to what the CFD is using today in terms of the length of the rig and the tandem rear axles. Being that the cab is a Spartan, it matches Squad 3 and Engine 51.
I wonder if the ladder ever had a pre-piped waterway. It looks like there was space for an aerial pipe below the tip of the ladder.

Harry I thought you would be loving this show. As for donations of equipment and sales. The city loaned them apparatus but since the spare pool is so desperately needed they bought their own stuff. Most people don’t know the difference between an engine and a truck let alone manufacturers so I’m sure they’re not sitting in their living rooms going “OMG, they got a new apparatus.” Maybe the tv show should donate some equipment to CFD for all they did. When Ron Howard made backdraft he paid for some apparatus to be rebuilt and bought other stuff for CFD.

That would be cool Tim, but like Marty said, it won’t happen. The closest thing they “could” do, and that’s the keyword “could” but probably won’t, is to have a manufacturer loan them a demo for an indefinite amount of time. That way when they are done using it for filming, the manufacturer can sell it. However I really don’t think any company would do that. The only thing I could see donated is the chiefs Ford, since they don’t cost that much (in comparison) and are made on the south side. At the end of the day I really don’t think this show will be on more then 2-3 more years. It used to be good and entertaining (even if it is not the most realistic show at times), but now it isn’t as good, and I don’t watch it anymore.

They likely assumed that non fire apparatus people won’t notice or care.
Either that or they wanted to cover all builders at the urging of their legal department.

Tim, a donation like that isn’t going to happen. First, the cost of a Truck Co is much higher than an Engine Co. Especially now. Second and more important most rigs look so similar today you need to see the logo to know who’s it is. Ward LaFrance had a unique look back then (most did back then) and thus the donation was much more of an advertisement that similar would be today.

Thanks Chuck. Mike C not a bad idea. Although when Emergency! was filmed Ward LaFarance donated an engine to NBC. It was a great move on Ward LaFrance’s part, their sales skyrocketed after that. I would love to see Seagrave do that. Spartans with Seagrave stickers and Pierces with Luverne emblems is just weird to me. I don’t know how the studio acquires the rigs but I do see a lot of Evergreen Park (or former Evergreen Park) rigs as extras.

Now that Seagrave offers a single axle ladder again, I think the set should buy one!!! They could have part of the episode of the excitement with the new arrival of a new truck! Maybe part of the episode at the factory. I’m just dreaming now!

I sit corrected, gentlemen. Thank you.

Chuck I (we) are aware of the logos on the rig. The Spartan logo is shaped like a diamond as the founders of the company were from the Diamond Reo Truck company.

Chuck, I’m quite certain you’re mistaken. Any quick google image search of Seagrave will prove otherwise. Further, La Grange Park (if it was theirs), did not have that decal in that place, or at all. They had a Star of Life there when it was sold, as all red. The show must’ve added it when they made it black over red, and as their old truck was a Seagrave I’m guessing most likely someone thought it belonged there, but doesn’t.

Anyone notice the pierce eng? It has painted roll up doors.
#13 by Chuck on January 16, 2020 - 8:54 PM
That is NOT a Seagrave “decal”. That is the Spartan Motors logo. It appears on their chassis even if the rest of the rig is built by somebody else.

Chuck the Spartan emblem is below the window at the paint line. The Seagrave flame emblem is on the black between the officer’s window and the jump seat window

A Spartan/LTI quint with a Seagrave decal on the cab. I like it.

So, I think they ended up buying LaGrange Park’s old quint that they put up for sale last year. It’s a Spartan/LTI quint, but it looks like they put a cabinet around the intakes and discharges for whatever reason? Also interesting to me is that they put a Seagrave logo on the side like their old one… except this isn’t a Seagrave.

That “new” Truck 81 looks pretty sharp; wonder where they got it from? Certainly an upgrade from what they had.

Excellent. Never know when you’ll come across eye candy.
