Excerpts from the DailyHerald.com:
Streamwood officials may soon undertake a plan to replace the village’s 47-year-old Fire Station 1 and similarly outdated public works headquarters with new facilities by spring 2021. The need to replace these buildings was identified by a comprehensive study of all the village’s infrastructure a few years ago. Both projects are planned to be done simultaneously and funded by an estimated $20 million bond issue, which the village board might authorize near the end of the year. Because the village will pay off its existing debt this fall from the police station that opened in 2007, the net impact on taxpayers from the new bonds is expected to be nothing.
The new bonds are expected to be paid off in 20 years.
The current Fire Station 1 at 1204 S. Park Ave. is planned to be demolished and replaced by the new, larger building on the same site. It will also become the new location for the fire department’s administrative offices currently housed at Station 3.
All three fire stations have inadequate space for storage and the decontamination of equipment, but additional space is expected to be made at the other two stations that opened in 1992 and 2002 by relocating some of their operations to the new station.
Like many newer fire stations, Streamwood’s proposed facility is designed with individual bedrooms and bathrooms, which in part help adapt to the changing percentages of male and female firefighters.
The short-term impact of housing personnel and equipment in two stations instead of three is expected to be challenging but manageable. Another unavoidable impact will be to the response times in the area primarily served by Station 1, but Streamwood’s other stations will be closer to that area than the next nearest fire station in Bartlett.

mike c well lets say that streamwood only did 500 calls a year per station I would say it could be better to just combine stations but I am very sure they are likely doing 5000 to 6000 a year so however I think it is indeed a great decision what makes sense for one dept may not for another because it is always nice to get a new fire station

Harry,
How is call volume a factor in deciding if a new station is needed? This will be a great asset to the village. This will allow for improved training. This will allow Streamwood to serve the citizens with the growing diversity of the nature of calls. Rigs won’t need to be shuffled around to get one or the other out. The living quarters at the current station 31 are sub-par. The village doesn’t have sufficient space to accommodate all the apparatus. This new station will bring GREAT value to the village.

This station was actually closed and shut down for a period of time (months if not more than a year) 4-5 (?) years ago. Then they had a structure fire literally across the street and also managed to get some grants to re-open the station.
Only E31 runs out of there, A32 and T32 are cross-manned at station 32 about a mile away. Old Q31 seems to bounce between S31 and S32.
At one point, there was an A31, A32 and A33, would be nice to get back to that. Run volume can get heavy at times – but also there are long slack times too.

yes it is always nice when a dept gets a new station heck 47 years old is not that old for some but some yes I think it depends on call volume there is a dept in Massachusetts for a small town that has one from 1890 and they run 3000 plus calls a years out of 3 houses

I wonder if they’ll make it a pull thru station. I won’t say which, so you girls won’t cry, but I know a department that recently built two pull thru stations with no enough space for their stuff and they’re backing in rigs. These chiefs and village administrators seriously needed to play with Lincoln logs when they were kids.

My understanding is to only run the engine. As stated they are cramped with space. The current station 31 is poorly laid out. The apparatus bay is small, and the living quarters are rough. This will really benefit the village and the firefighters.

Looks nice. Right now I understand they only run an engine out of that station. Looks like there will be plenty of space for a few more rigs. Would they put a ambulance there? I believe now they house a reserve rig and a pick up truck.
