RE:  Sutphen Voluntarily Removing 5-Section Aerial Devices From Service

Sutphen Corporation has announced that the Company is instructing customers to remove all SPH 100, SP 110, SPI 112, and SAI 110 Aerial devices from service, until further notice, effective immediately.

The company states that customers are instructed to use the affected apparatus in the capacity of an engine or support vehicle only.  The Company will stay in close contact with its customers to report details and when the units may be placed  back in service.

“At this time, our priority is the safety of our firefighters,” says Drew Sutphen, President of the Company.  “In light of the recent incidents, we recognize there is an immediate need to take precautionary action.  I would rather take every precaution necessary than to put firefighters at risk.”

The company states that it will be contacting customers with the affected units personally to inform them of the events that have occurred and the steps that are being taken to get the units back in to service in a timely manner.

“We feel the need to personally assure our customers that we are working to investigate and correct the situation,” Drew continues.

Sutphen Corporation is an Ohio based privately held, family owned business that manufactures custom built emergency response vehicles.  The company’s headquarters are located in suburban Dublin, Ohio northwest of Columbus.

For more information contact the sales office.

11alive.com in Atlanta has an article about a recent incident where three firefighters were injured while in the basket of a Sutphen tower, the second such incident in rent weeks.

Three Hall County firefighters were injured in a training exercise on Tuesday.

According to Hall County Fire Services spokesperson Scott Cagle, the three men were in a bucket on top of a ladder that was extended. There was a mechanical failure and the ladder dropped about 20 feet and then jammed. That sudden stop is what injured the firemen.

Two of the firefighters were life-lighted to Grady Memorial Hospital; the third was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Gainesville, Ga.

All three were said to be alert, conscious and breathing. They were identified as Will Griffin, T.J. Elliot and Stephen Jackson. They were said to be in stable condition.

Chicago Still & Box Alarm fire 7-22-14

This from Eric Haak:

Just before 1830 hrs on Tuesday evening (7/22), the chief of Chicago’s 22nd Battalion pulled up on the scene of a working fire in an occupied 1.5-story frame residence.  The fire appeared to have started in the rear portion of the attic and quickly consumed much of the attic space.  With a three-story, ordinary, apartment building with wood frame porches as the sector D exposure, and a heat index near 100, the 22nd requested a Still & Box Alarm within minutes of arrival.  Heavy fire vented out the sector B dormer and through the roof above, but within a few minutes, the fire darkened down and was brought under control.  The truck seen in the images is 27.  This was the second evening in the last three that Engines 75 and 62 had a working fire in their still district.

Calumet Park house fire, 7-21-14

This from Eric Haak:

The Calumet Park Fire Department received a report of a structure on the 12400 block of South Honore at about 1920 hours on Monday evening (7-21-14).  Response time for the first engine and truck was less than two minutes.  Companies arrived to find the occupants outside and a fair amount of smoke pushing from the front door.  Companies made entry and quickly found the seat of the fire to be in a back bedroom.  Within three minutes of arrival, the Calumet Fire Department had the fire knocked down and held in check.  The fire did not extend to any other rooms or the attic.  Posen, Midlothian, Merrionette Park and Riverdale went auto-aid.

Swimmer drowns in Grayslake 7-21-14

This from Sam Borcia:

The Grayslake Fire Department and Quad 2 departments were dispatched initially to a reported water rescue on Third Lake near 202 Mainsail Drive in Third Lake on Monday, 7-21-14, at around 4:13 PM. Dispatch advised it was a 16 year old male who was swimming and did not surface. It was then upgraded to a MABAS 2nd Alarm on Dive Box #27-69, and then later, they requested an additional 2nd alarm on Box #27-67. At around 8:00 PM, they found the body. I’ve included some of the photos of apparatus as I couldn’t get close to the water to take pictures of the operations on the lake.

Thanks, Sam Borcia.

Chicago working fire, 7-20-14

This from Eric Haak:

A few images from a working fire at 117th and Michigan in Chicago on Sunday afternoon.  Fire was already blowing out a sector B window on arrival even though Engine 75’s response distance was only 2 blocks.  The fire on the first floor was quickly brought under control but had made it’s way into a confined space attic.  All images of interior work being done without masks or packs were taken during the overhaul phase, well after the fire was declared out.

Worker trapped in trench in Niles 7-19-14 (pt 7)

This from Drew Smith:

Brief overview of Niles’ TRT incident:

17:10 RED Center dispatches initial call

17:12 dispatch of TR3 (MABAS Division 3 TRT squad) and all on-duty Division 3 TRT techs

18:10 TRT box requested for off-duty TRT techs

Worker was buried in the kneeing position. Earth covered him up to about his shoulders with one arm complexly buried and the other one free at or about head level.

Shoring occurred rather quickly. Digging the victim out was limited to one tech due to the small size of the hole.

Lin-Mar Towing assisted with their low pressure air bags which were used to fill on sloughed areas behind shoring.

Northfield PW sewer vac truck with Division 3 ResQ-Vac used. Northfield PW operators who are also FFs respond with this setup division-wide on trench calls.

Extrication completed about 19:05

At the point the worker was positioned, the depth of the hole was measured at six feet from surface level to bottom of area worker was removed from.

About 20 TRT techs supported the operation along with 5 ambulances, 7 engines (includes COQ), 5 squads, 2 truck companies, and several staff vehicles. Most of the box fire companies were held in staging.

On September 27, 2006 a similar incident occurred in 8300 block of Octavia in Niles at about the same time of day.
