Yep Never been in the fire service. You must be pro firefighter of the year as if it sounds. Merry Christmas

John C…it sounds like Rusty is one of those great part time Crestwood Cops aka fire fans with (Fire) gear to hide their fear (of fire)
#3 by John C on December 24, 2012 - 6:04 PM
Rusty, ever used a helmet with only borkes? Non-NFPA compliant. Ever used ANY gear more than 10 years old? Non-NFPA compliant. Ever put ANYTHING on the floor in the cab? Non-NFPA compliant.
And the big one–
Ever ride with less than 4 guys on a truck…non NFPA compliant.
If you’re actually in the fire service (which I somewhat doubt), you’re breaking NFPA all the time.

Scott I dont think anybody cares if you concur with FFPM. I dont think many chiefs will sign waiver forms against nfpa standard. Just like if your firegear wasn’t NFPA approved do you think the chief will still buy it? Wait im sure you would say yes.
#5 by John C on December 23, 2012 - 10:17 PM
NFPA in-and-of-itself are JUST recommendations and guidelines. Without being enforced by some governing body, they mean NOTHING.
That being said, some states/municipalities have turned the NFPA verbiage into legislation, and THEN it becomes enforceable, because it has been made law.
As was brought up, almost all manufacturers will require various Waiver of Liability for violating NFPA, though. This is just a cover-their-ass move.

I CONCUR WITH FFPM571… it’s up to each town to do WHAT they LIKE! For the other “experts” check into the standards if you won’t believe him…
#7 by FFPM571 on December 23, 2012 - 7:55 PM
Yes ..You can order a lightbar from any manufactuer in any configuration you want.. Red,White,Blue,Amber,Green and even Purple….

FFPM571 You sound like a true expert in the Emergency Vehicle Sector. Hmmmm. So Federal Signal will build a light bar against the NFPA standard? But I guess you are the expert.
#9 by FFPM571 on December 23, 2012 - 6:28 PM
Once again some people are under the misunderstanding that NFPA is a law. Its a standard. As a person who works in the field of emergency vehicle equipment and vehicle lighting I am well versed in what can and cant be done. There is no NFPA standard for Chiefs vehicles.

That’s my mistake I prefer the 2010 Expeditions to the new Explorers but the 2009 Chevy Chevy Tahoes look better to me as well.

In regards to the green lights on fire apparatus (ENG, TRK, SQD ONLY, not buggies or ambos). In order for an apparatus to leave the manufacturer’s factory, it must have all red on the front of the vehicle. No green can be put on at the factory. However, as CFD does, the green is inside. Or, once an apparatus leaves a factory and passes the delievery inspection, a town may do what they like with the lights. Honestly, changing the red to a green, while it now becomes non-NFPA compliant, do you think that one little light really affects a negative outcome?

Thanks for publishing the photos Josh but I definitely prefer the 2009 models to the new ones. These don’t look as good at the 2009s in my opinion.
#13 by rusty on December 23, 2012 - 4:12 PM
nfpa sure does have a say where the lights go. if they didn’t they would have the green on the outer edge. Thats why Pierce Crimson Ferrara won’t put green on the outer edges. They will if the chief of the department signs a waiver.

NFPA does not acknowledge green as a primary warning color. It is accepted as a command light. NFPA has no bearing on where it’s mounted. The reason is because it puts a red light on the outside of the bar to be seen better in the intersections. Second there are plenty of Ford police utility interceptors avalible as I have worked on alot in my shop. The have held up well in police service so far.

While they look like Explorers they might be Interceptors. Check out this link http://www.ford.com/fordpoliceinterceptor/#/models/utility
The Interceptor is built on the Explorer chassis but is pursuit rated and comes with many features that a FD would want as standard. Most notable is that the gear shift is on the steering column and there is space between the dash and seats for radios, siren, etc.

I wish I had the time on my hands the NFPA guys have sometimes.
Very good looking vehicles though! Even the cop car ha ha!

We have been trying to decide between an Explorer and a Tahoe for a new Chief Vehicle. Obviously the Tahoe is bigger, but the Explorers look really nice. The issue is that the Explorers are new and there is not much feedback on them due to a lack of availability. Thoughts anyone???
#19 by rusty on December 23, 2012 - 1:20 PM
the green light is moved to the inside because nfpa wont allow a green light on the outer edge. its the same rule if you look at the front green warning lights. they are moved to the inside with a red light on the outside.

I know they have 8 of these, im guessing that they will go to all the field chiefs because they have the oldest buggies in service.
#21 by Tim Wolfe on December 23, 2012 - 1:13 PM
I heard there are 7 new buggies but there are 8 Field Chiefs??
#22 by chris on December 23, 2012 - 12:55 PM
anybody know why the last few years all the new lightbars they moved the the green light from outside to the inside just wondering

Great pics. So cool that the CFD still uses the traditional paint instead of experimenting with the different (and often horrendous) color schemes like the FDNY. Hope they’ll keep this forever.
#24 by Martin on December 23, 2012 - 12:36 PM
Hopefully one of these new buggies is for 4-5-6

The CPD Explorer looks great.
I just don’t like the blue stripe how it just begins in the middle of nowhere on the front fender. I would have made it start at the headlight, then continue back. But I guess it makes sense to someone somewhere…ha!
