New engines are for Engine 1 downtown and Engine 10 on far west side. Truck is for Truck 6 on far east side. All medics are 3 years or newer and have received the last E-series Medtecs in January. Not sure what will be replacing them. There’s 9 front-line engines, 3 front-line trucks, 6 front-line medics, 2 battalion SUVs, and a ton of reserve apparatus just waiting to be photographed… Contact the fire museum and ask for David Lewis, I’m sure he would take anyone around for a photo shoot.

I see that Aurora is mentioned as getting 2 new pumps and a tower. Anyone know where these new rigs will be assigned? Nice to see some info from Aurora as it is hardly mentioned. Thank you

I can say the 2011 F450 chassis has been quite nice. The 4×4 was great in the snow. The box we have on it is quite large and I’m able to stand up completely without hitting my head(I’m 6’1″). Also Bolingbrook just took delivery and put in service a new Pierce PUC this week.

I run with a rescue squad here in Virginia and we use all Ford F-series. The newer medic units we have are F-450s because of the height, length, and the whole configuration of the Osage boxes that are on them. The older medic units we have are F-350s and the Osage boxes and one National box are a bit smaller on them. It kinda runs along with what Joe wrote.

I saw that Thornton is getting a Pierce later this year. I’ve heard rumors it’s going to be a rescue pumper. Rockdale is also getting a new tanker in the fall.

I’m surprised that there are no Terrastars on order. As to my research, they are holding up well.

Ford, because they apparently can’t design a Power Stroke for the E-series anymore, decided a few years ago to only offer gasoline (V8, V10) options in the E-series. This has pushed quite a few area departments away from the E-series and toward the F-series as the F-series ambulance prep package is only offered with the 6.7L Power Stroke diesel.
As far as why they’d pick the 4×4 chassis, I’m not entirely sure. My guess is based on the size box they want. The F-350 can’t handle the weight of a large module leading to a very small patient compartment, a minimal amount of headroom for the crew, and big storage issues. I’d guess the standard configuration for the F-450 is 4×4. I doubt departments would see 4×4 as a reasonable investment with budgets being so tight right now.

Whats with all the Ford F450 chassis four wheel drive ? Is Ford giving them away at half price ?
