An incident which occurred at a water rescue on November 1st has initiated an investigation into allegations by a Chicago police officer that he was pushed to the ground by a Chicago Fire Department Captain.
Statter911.com has an article and description of the event HERE.
The Tribune has an article HERE. Excerpts include:
The Chicago Fire Department has launched an internal investigation after a captain was accused of pushing a Chicago police officer to the ground as both departments answered a rescue call for two men who had fallen into the river near Goose Island earlier this month.
The scuffle apparently did not hinder the rescue, and the two men were pulled from the water at about 1 a.m. Nov. 1 near the 1200 block of West North Avenue. The police officer, assigned to the marine unit, later filed a report.
No charges were filed, but Fire Department internal affairs investigators are looking into the conduct of the fire captain and other fire officials who were on the scene, officials said.
“There is an active investigation in progress,” said Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford. “The investigation will determine what happened at that scene and see if any violations happened with our members.”

I understand he shouldn’t have probably pushed him to the ground, but now he is saying that he is injured from it. Are you kidding me, from being pushed to the ground. From everything I have read, and I don’t know this Capt so it’s not like I am trying to defend a friend of mine. From the things that I have read is that the Battalion Chief on the scene stated to get back everyone who didn’t have a life vest on because it’s their ass if someone falls in and gets injured. I am sure the cop just ran in there wanting to save the day. I have heard many stories about the CPD wanting to make the rescues so CFD wouldn’t get it, since they both have water rescue units. To think that he wants this guy arrested is hilarious. It just shows how the way CFD and CPD do business is changing. A stupid thing between 2 guys on the street is now in the news and being investigated by the Inspector General or whoever is investigating it. Also taking someone off of Squad 1 and sticking him in the 6th District is a stupid comment. Him being on Squad 1 has nothing to do with it. If he was on E126 and on a water rescue call down south, the same thing could happen. Station or Rig assignments have nothing to do with this.

the cop did act like an adult.. No he didt run to the papers. there is a pretty extensive cpd blog that EVERYONE reads, the cops, the public, the reporters… He acted like an adult. Maybe he should have acted like a cop and taken the capt to the ground, handcuffed his ass, and put him in the lock up right then and there. Im sure that would have made the situation much better…

No matter what he did, that cop should act like an adult and not run to the papers about this. Good job putting the cameras and newspapers on CPD and CFD before contract time.

They can investigate all they want .. Capt Altman was wrong … he pushed a cop to the ground THEN grabbed a member of the dive truck, a Lt. by the Life Jacket and Mother ( *&&*) him. Take him off Squad 1 and stick his can in the 6th dist .Have a nice day Capt… and No your behavior will NOT warrant a fundraiser when you take you suspension time.
