Chicago Engine 60 is due to receive their new high pressure engine soon. Reportedly it is currently sitting in their quarters. It is a 2010 Spartan Gladiator/Crimson with a 2,000-GPM pump. Engine 60 carries shop # D654 and has 500 gallons of water plus 35 gallons of foam.
Dennis McGuire, Jr. sent in a few images of the new engine and the old engine from a recent visit to the academy.

Engine 60’s new rig, D-654, WENT IN SERVICE a few days ago. Rumor has it the old rig, D-640, is slated for Engine 103.

Hey Bill sorry for the typo meant 2006, anyway thanks for the update, as always very informative, and I am sure some engine co will be thrilled to get the older E60.

Mike from Boston, Engine 14 is using a 2010 standard 1,500 gpm Spartan Crimson pumper which was one of three that went in service last spring. The other two are at Engines 65 and 82.
As far as an old (96) rig goes, is that what you meant to say or did you mean Engine 60’s 2006 rig?
Chicago didn’t really have 1996 engines, however we did have nine, 1995 model Spartan Luverne engines such as what Engine 14 was using. The only 1995 Spartan Luverne that is currently in frontline service is at Engine 50, which was reassigned during the past year. It replaced a 1998 HME (short wheel base) Luverne, which had a smaller cab. The 1995 Spartan Luverne was originally assigned to Engine 89 until about a year ago, when Engine 89 received a 2001 Spartan Luverne 1,500 gpm (hand me down) engine that had previously been assigned to Engine 5, and was the last rig that had been assigned to Engine 61 before going out of service in 2005.

I would have to say Chicago has some of the nicest apparatus of any major city. And this blog is the best around, is there any assignment for their old (96) rig?
Also just off this subject anyone know what E14 has for a rig? Saw a video of what looked like a newer rig but the webpage shows I believe a 95 spartan. Thanks guys

John the reason why Engine 60 is getting a new rig is because the new rig is a “triple stage” high pressure pumper, which, when in the triple stage mode delivers over 600 psi (pounds per square inch) of water pressure which is used in high rise building fires on the upper floors as the extra psi helps give the water a needed boost especially in your older high rises that don’t have their own supplemental pumps to kick up the pressure.
Engines 42, 98, 5, and now 60 will be using triple stage engines because of the number of high rises in their districts.

Why did they replace a newer 2006 engine and not a 1999 Luverne? Like 102 or 109?

It was sitting in quarters but then was taken away to have some work done to it before it goes in service, reportedly on Sunday February 27th.
Also rumor has it that Engine 102 is really trying to get this as their engine.

I can’t imagine they’d make that a reserve as that company is newer than a LOT of the other engines.
