At the Glenview Box Alarm last week which occurred at a park district storage facility, Steve Redick made his way around the scene and documented the engines that were pumping.

Homewood has been added to the site

Homewood Fire Department decal

In Division 24, the Homewood Fire Department has been added to the site. They cover 5 square miles with a combination of career and part-time personnel. Their apparatus is from Pierce, Smeal, Crimson, and 3D. An interesting aspect of their fleet is the number of different chassis manufacturers that are represented in their station. The Pierce utilizes a Lance chassis, and they also have one cab and chassis from HME, Spartan, and Pemfab. They have two ambulances in their station plus a reserve ambulance which they share with Flossmoor and Hazel Crest. This unit is housed in the Hazel Crest station. All images were submitted by Karl Klotz.

New home for Oak Lawn truck

Karl Klotz has informed us that Anne Arundel County Maryland has purchased the former Oak Lawn E-ONE truck 3.  It will be assigned to Truck Co. 31.

Oak Lawn firefighters spec’d out this truck during the term of an interim chief. When a permanent chief was hired, a decision was made that a 75′ quint would better serve the fire department’s needs.  This unit was taken out of service along with the 1991 Pierce Lance HDR and both were offered for sale. Truck 3 as it is pictured here was in service for only a few months.

New pumper/squad in Glencoe

Glencoe Fire Department Pierce Saber Squad 30

Glencoe Squad 30 which arrived recently is not yet in service. It is a Pierce Saber and replaces a Pierce Lance. Larry Shapiro photo

The Glencoe Fire Department (Public Safety Department) received a new unit for Squad 30. Replacing a 1993 Pierce Lance with a 20″ raised roof, the new Squad 30 is considerably smaller and utilizes a Saber cab with a 10″ raised roof. The new unit no longer has a cascade system and has less overall compartment space. It is roughly the same size as Engine 30, a 1996 Pierce Saber.

Squad 30 has deep rescue-style compartments and a pair of extrication tools in the front bumper. It has a hydraulic ladder rack, air bags, spare air bottles, 1,500 GPM pump, 500 gallons of water, electric cord reels, cribbing, a portable generator for the hydraulic tools, assorted hand tools, and various extinguishers.

Once the radios are installed, Squad 30 will go into service.

Flossmoor is added to Division 24 departments

Another department in Division 24 has been added to the site thanks to Karl Klotz. Minus the brush rig, the entire Flossmoor fleet is now available to view HERE. Flossmoor was one of the first area departments to embrace the maximum height cab extensions beginning in 1990 with an early Pierce Lance followed in 1994 by an even larger cab from HME on a unit built by Luverne. Both of these units featured fully enclosed top mounted pump modules. Their newest engine also features a raised roof cab from HME although it is shorter and lower than the earlier model. This 2000 model year Central States engine also features a top mount pump panel but it is not enclosed within the cab. Rounding out their suppression fleet is a 1996 custom Sutphen 70′ mid-ship tower ladder. All of their apparatus are painted black over red.

Bedford Park is on the site

The Bedford Park Fire Department in Division 21 has three stations. They have a Pierce department with three engines including a brand new 2010 Impel. They also have a tower ladder and a Snorkel. Bedford Park was home to one of the first Pittman Snorkel units on a GMC chassis for the fire service. The first Snorkel was in Chicago, retrofitted by the shops on a truck that was bought by and built for the streets department and then ‘obtained’ by the fire department. Bedford Park’s original Snorkel is stored in town and evidently in need of restoration. They have since had several Snorkel aerials including the most recent which was built by Pierce in 1997. All three Bedford Park Snorkels can be seen in the header of the department website HERE. They have a well written and very informative history on their site that’s worth a read. Bedford Park also has the regional Haz Mat Unit which uses a 1991 Pierce Lance with the early series Lance cab. Thanks to Karl Klotz for supplying the images.
