2-Alarm fire in Island Lake, 11-11-14

The Chicago Tribune has an article about last night’s 2-Alarm fire for the Wauconda Fire District:

A fire caused extensive damaged to a Sikh temple in the far northwest suburbs.

Firefighters were called to the Guru Nanak Sikh Mission temple at 217 W. State Road in Island Lake at about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday [to answer an automatic alarm] according to Wauconda Fire District officials. Firefighters arrived to see smoke “billowing from the building,” said Wacounda Fire Chief David Dato.

At first, firefighters were able to battle the blaze from inside the building but as flames spread, crews had to take a defensive position, Dato said.

Firefighters put out the blaze just after midnight, and no injuries were reported, officials said.

Fire officials said the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms as well as the Illinois state fire marshal’s office will investigate because the structure housed a place of worship.

Fox Lake 2nd Alarm house fire 4-8-13

This from Jeff Rudolph:

… some shots from Fox Lake … 04/08/13 Fox Lake responded to a fire in the 38000 blk. of Hillandale in un-incorporated Spring Grove . Engine 223 arrived and found an elevated 1-story house well involved. Command called for an Antioch engine and a Spring Grove tender before pulling box 22-14 to the 2nd alarm for tenders and chiefs, as well as a special for squads from McHenry and Newport. Steep terain and limited access proved difficult for both firefighters and apparatus, as tenders had to back down several blocks of narrow winding gravel roads. Initial thoughts that the resident was still inside the burning house proved wrong, as he arrived from a trip to the store to find firefighters attempting to save his home. Crews worked into the night to extinguish and overhaul the remains. No injuries reported.

The color of fire trucks (part 5)

Four fire departments in Lake County, MABAS Division 4, have had non-red fire apparatus over the years. To date, only the Fox Lake Fire Department and the Winthrop Harbor Fire Department maintain fleets that are not red, red & white, or red & black.

The fire department at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center in North Chicago used to run apparatus that was either solid lime green or that later had a white roof. The military has since changed over to white over red … with the exception of some ARFF and other airport assigned units.

Great Lakes Naval Training Center Fire Department

The Great Lakes Fire Department used to run with this 1994 KME Renegade that was assigned to Engine 1911. It had a 1,250-GPM pump and carried 750 gallons of water. There were also two 50-gallon foam tanks on-board. The federal government purchased many of these units over a period of several years in the 1990s and deployed them at bases throughout the world. Several years ago, KME completed a contract to recondition most of these engines. Great Lakes currently has a 1997/2010 Renegade engine at their station 2. Larry Shapiro collection

When the Lake Zurich Rescue Squad and the Lake Zurich Fire Department were separate entities, the rescue squad ran ambulances and a small squad unit. When they purchased this unit in 1979, there was federal funding provided to help with the cost. One stipulation though was that the squad had to be painted white over lime green, which at the time was considered a matter of safety with regards to the visibility of the unit.

Lake Zurich Rescue Squad

Squad 955 with the Lake Zurich Rescue Squad was a small quick-response squad built by E-ONE in 1979 on a GMC K35 chassis. Larry Shapiro collection

The Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District purchased two Mack CF engines; one in 1968 and the other in 1975. Both were painted white.

Round Lake Engine 638 was one of two CF Mack engines that they purchased. This was built in 1975 and had a 1,000-GPM pump with 500 gallons of water. Larry Shapiro collection

The Waukegan apparatus has always been red or red and white with a few exceptions. In 1979, they purchased a DOT spec’d small squad just like the one that was bought by the Lake Zurich Rescue Squad. Additionally, they purchased a 1969 Ward LaFrance Model P80 engine on an Ambassador chassis that was white over lime green which was typical of the Ward LaFrance units being shipped during that era. They went on to purchase three more units from Ward LaFrance in 1976 and  1977, all of which were white over red.

The first of five Ward LaFrance units that was purchased by the Waukegan Fire Department was this 1969 Model P80 Ambassador Series engine with a 1,250-GPM pump and 1,000-gallons of water. Larry Shapiro collection

Fox Lake is on the site

The Fox Lake Fire Department and Fire Protection District in Lake County has been added to the site. They have four stations although Station1, their original station, is unmanned. Their staffing is a combination of career, contract, and paid-on-call personnel.

As their namesake suggests, their district has quite a few lakes, and as such they have five boats housed in their stations. The apparatus is all by Alexis Fire Equipment and built on chassis by Spartan, with two exceptions. Tanker 2262 was built by E-ONE on a chassis by Federal Motors with a Hurricane cab, and reserve Engine 2223 was built by FMC on the first of three Super Command Cab chassis by Spartan featuring the original square design.

Long Grove structure fire 9-15-11

The Long Grove Fire Department received a call this morning about a house on fire at 1889 Checker Road. The fire department had been using the vacant house for training over the past two weeks as eight other departments participated in multiple interior evolutions per day. The training was completed yesterday and the fire department is scheduled to burn the house to the ground for the developer this Saturday morning with area residents in attendance.

The call was delayed roughly 20 minutes this morning because the neighbor thought the fire department might still be training. Upon the realization that the fire was unattended, she phoned in the alarm and Long Grove responded with their full assignment including Tanker 55 since there are no hydrants in the area. The header could be seen shortly after leaving the station, and the first unit reported a working fire at the north end of the house where a large stack of wooden pallets had been stored.

Tankers were requested from Prospect Heights and Fox Lake since the department wanted to prevent the structure from going to the ground. Engines from Buffalo Grove and Palatine came in as did an ambulance from Arlington Heights for rehab. Much of the house was saved and will be burned on Saturday …

Gurnee 5-11 alarm fire 8-23-11

Gurnee Fire Department 5th alarm fire Grand Avenue Vista Hotel Holiday Inn 8-23-11

Thick smoke escapes from the ballroom section of the Vista Hotel which was undergoing renovation to reopen as a Holiday Inn on Grand Avenue in Gurnee. Larry Shapiro photo

The Gurnee Fire Department received calls from motorists driving on Grand Avenue reporting smoke coming from the Vista Hotel at 6161 W. Grand Avenue at roughly 6:45PM on Tuesday. The hotel which previously was a Holiday Inn was closed and currently undergoing renovation. When the first companies arrived, they found heavy smoke and fire visible in the ballroom section of the complex, which is separated from the three-floor building with guest rooms by a foyer and open lobby area. Engine 1322 advanced a line through the main entrance in an effort to prevent the fire from moving into the adjacent lobby. The encountered intense heat and heavy fire which was fueled in part by the ballroom tables and chairs that were being stored in one area. They backed out and companies went defensive.

Long lead-outs across Grand Avenue forced the road to be closed as Mundelein and Beach Park engines found hydrants on the opposite side of the street. The fire was contained to the ballroom structure which was destroyed plus minor extension into the lobby area. In all, there were 23 departments represented at the scene representing the majority of Lake County Division 4 departments plus others from Divisions 3 and 5. The list includes Round Lake, Antioch, Fox Lake, Mundelein, Beach Park, Pleasant Prairie (WI), Libertyville, Newport, Zion, Waukegan, Deerfield, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Lake Zurich, Spring Grove, Long Grove, Countryside, Great Lakes, Lake Forest, Lake Villa, Buffalo Grove, Grayslake, Highland Park, Wauconda, plus the MABAS Division 5 Air Unit, and the MESS Canteen.
