3-Alarm fire in Rolling Meadows, 3-4-15 (part 5)

This from Steve Redick at the 3-Alarm fire in Rolling Meadows:

A distant northwest suburb of Chicago (Rolling Meadows). Fire in a large apartment complex … poor access to 3 sides of the building and difficult water supply. Extreme cold, heavy snow and ice cover. A resident jumped from the 3rd floor and did not survive. Fire destroyed a large portion of the building but was apparently held at a fire wall. Two elevated master streams, a deck gun, and several handlines were used. The aerial view gives an idea of the size and limited access to the fire building. Interesting to note the daylight photo is from a major fire within this same complex several years ago with a similar outcome, but in much better weather conditions. All the the images plus a video can be seen at www.ksc711.smugmug.com

3-Alarm fire in Rolling Meadows, 3-4-15 (part 1)

Rolling Meadows companies were called to 5201 Carriageway Drive for a reported fire in a third floor apartment around 8PM Wednesday evening (3/4/15). While en-route, they were advised of a sofa on fire with flames climbing the wall, and Battalion 15 upgraded the alarm to a Code 4 for the working fire. Police arriving on the scene reported flames shooting out of a third floor window, and then that a resident had jumped from a third floor balcony. The alarm was then upgraded to a MABAS Box Alarm.

Reportedly the police officers were performing CPR on the victim when firefighters arrived. The Chicago Tribune reports

The apartment was evacuated but officials said one person had died as a result of the blaze, officials said.

The person, whose age and gender was not immediately provided, jumped from the balcony of a third floor unit of the apartment building, said Rolling Meadows Fire Chief Scott Franzgrote. The person was pronounced dead at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights.

As of about 10 p.m., the blaze had been “contained,” but firefighters were still working to put out the fire, Franzgrote said. The first and second floors of the building had been evacuated, and firefighters were currently checking the third floor.

The alarm was subsequently upgraded to a 2nd Alarm and then a 3rd Alarm before being struck out shortly before midnight.

Several contributors were at the scene and there will be a series of posts showing images and videos.  As a side note, this building is directly across there street from another building in the same complex that was the site of a 3-Alarm fire several years ago.

Box Alarm fire in Winnetka, 2-26-14

This from Larry Shapiro:

The Winnetka Fire Department was called to a house with smoke coming from the attic at 924 Pine Tree Lane just after 9PM on Wednesday evening. Prior to the fire department’s arrival, police units confirmed smoke from a house at the corrected address of 910 Pine Tree Lane.

The first engine turned down the street and was completely immersed in smoke with near zero visibility. They pulled past the house and the truck was able to back up to the driveway. Heavy smoke at the scene was the updated size up at a split level house that was being renovated. Companies attempted an interior attack as fire burned through the roof at the rear of the house. Northfield Truck 29 reported seeing heavy fire as they rounded the corner two blocks away.

The interior attack was abandoned shortly thereafter as the fire spread throughout the attic space. Fortunately the interior crews spotted a hole in the first floor before it could cause injury to any firefighters.

The alarm was upgraded to a Box Alarm as an elevated master stream was put into operation from Winnetka Truck 28 in addition to multiple hand lines. As the fire progressed, Northfield Truck 29 also put an elevated master stream into service. The house backed up to Tower Road, and trucks from both Glenview and Skokie setup there but did not deploy master streams. Both ladders were put over the scene to provide illumination for firefighters.

Other units included a squad from Morton Grove, an ambulance from Wilmette, the MESS Canteen, and multiple chief officers.
