Western Springs is added to the site

Western Springs Fire Department patchAnother department in MABAS Division 10 has been added to the site. The Western Springs Fire Department currently has one station at 4353 Wolf Road. Station 2 is under construction at 5501 Grand Avenue. The apparatus consists of two Medtec ambulances, three engines, a truck, and a command car. Staffing is a combination of full-time, contract, part-time, and POC personnel. Currently the apparatus is painted white over red although past vehicles, which will be displayed in the historic photo gallery, were all white. Images of the current fleet were supplied by Bill Friedrich.

Larry here is some new news. The station faces West and has non drive thru apparatus bays. The station is scheduled to open in the Summer of 2011. I am sure there will be a engine and ambulance assigned to this house. They may also store the two antiques down here. I will be scanning more of the historical Western Springs apparatus negatives.

Grayslake breaks ground for new station

The Grayslake Fire Protection District in MABAS Division 4 had a ground breaking ceremony this week at the site of what will be their Station 3 at 22405 Peterson Road and Route 60.

Construction of the new 10,600-square-foot station is scheduled to begin in March and be completed by September 2011.

Having the new fire station be located in the far southern portion of the district will significantly shorten response times …

Responding from Fire Station 1 in downtown Grayslake, or Fire Station 2 near the College of Lake County, can be hampered by train crossings and distance.

The third fire station is a response to Grayslake’s growth in recent years, he said in a statement.

The complete article can be found HERE from the Grayslake Patch.

Fox River & Countryside Fire Rescue District update

An article in Monday’s Daily Herald discusses a skirmish between the Fox River & Countryside Fire Rescue District and the Village of Campton Hills over the construction of a new fire station.  Below are excerpts from the article.

Campton Hills officials have now brought a cease-and-desist order to the battle over construction of a new fire station in the district.

“The Fox River and Countryside Fire/Rescue District has not been acting in good faith in its relationship with the village,” said Village President Patsy Smith in a written statement.

Smith said once it became clear the fire district wanted to build a fire station the village tried to speed up the review process only to see the district fail to supply information and documents about the fire station to the village for the past six weeks. Smith said the district’s withdrawal of the permit application only prolongs the process.

“They cannot legally continue building without the proper approvals,” Smith wrote. “What is needed at this point is for the fire district end its ‘gamesmanship’ and deal with the village and the citizens of the fire district in a straightforward manner. The lives of our citizens are at stake, and the village board does not appreciate the fire district’s deceptive methods of conducting business.”

The entire article can be found HERE.
Thanks to Dennis McGire, Jr. for keeping an eye on the new district.

An artist's rendering illustrating the new houses for Engine 16 and Engine 109.

The shape of these two new houses is squared off with lots of glass. The roof of the apparatus bays is flat where the others have an angled awning type roof. There is also different brick trim along the top of the brick walls and glass along the interior of the house instead of it being all brick. This house has a squared hose tower, and although several of the other stations lack one, the hose tower is rounded where they have been built. The new stations also have both horizontal and vertical windows as opposed to all The shape is squared off where others have an angled awning above the apparatus bays and different brick trim along the top of the brick walls.
