Wheeling almost ready to open 3rd station

In October of last year, the Wheeling Fire Department moved into their new headquarters Station 24 at 499 S. Milwaukee Avenue, vacating what once was the public safety building and village hall on Dundee Road. When the village opened a new village hall earlier in the year, the police department began the first phase of renovating the entire building to accommodate an enlarged and updated police headquarters. The second phase was to incorporate moving into what was the fire department headquarters, living space, and apparatus bays. As part of the master plan, Wheeling was to build a third fire station somewhere on the northwest side of town to accommodate moving the headquarters station further east. Caught by the economic downturn, Wheeling had to scrap plans for the third station and seek out an alternative arrangement that would continue to let them offer the level of coverage that residents and businesses had come to expect.

The compromise was to incorporate a sub-station within the new police headquarters occupying one of the former apparatus bays and altering the living space for a minimal staff of firefighters. The assignment of an engine company in the Dundee Road facility is expected to occur at 0700 on the 1st of February, as the construction is nearing a point of completion. Station 42, as it will be known within RED Center, will house an ALS engine company. The headquarters Station 24 houses the battalion chief, an ambulance, and a truck company which is able to staff an additional ambulance or the squad as the situation requires. A backup engine and second ambulance are also at Station 24.

Fox River and Countryside Fire District update

The Daily Herald has an article HERE about a delay in beginning construction of a new fire station in the Campton Hills area for the Fox River and Countryside Fire District. It appears that going before the zoning and appearance commissions was not expected to be a factor for the fire district and could impact their being up and running with the new fire department by the end of April when district’s contract with the village of St. Charles runs out.

Thanks to Dennis McGuire, Jr. for keeping on top of things for us.

The Grayslake Fire Protection District covers 25 square miles in the heart of Lake County. They currently run out of two stations and expect to break ground for Station 3 in the spring of 2011. The new station will be on Peterson Road just east of Route 60. Grayslake has a combination of full-time, part-time and contract personnel. New Station in Palatine

Construction is well underway on the new Palatine Fire Department Station 81 at 1215 N. Quentin Road, south of Dundee Road. The station is less than a mile from the current, outdated station which Palatine inherited from the Palatine Rural Fire District in January of 2001. When the fire department occupies the new facility, the Palatine Masonic Temple will move into the vacant fire station at 455 Dundee Road that was built in the early 1980s.

The new station 81 will be set back from the road with a fairly long driveway unlike the current facility. In addition, apparatus will enter onto a four-lane road with a center median. This will allow them easier and safer access to the roadway than they have now on the narrow stretch of Dundee Road which is heavily travelled and gets backed up daily. Larry Shapiro photo

The new fire station will have roughly 8,700 square feet of space and will be home to Quint 81 and Ambulance 81 which is currently a jump company. Larry Shapiro photo

Manhattan has been added to the site

Another department in MABAS Division 19 has been added to the site. The Manhattan Fire Protection District covers 72 square miles from two stations. Their staffing consists of 9 full-time personnel, 35 part-time, and 35 POCs. The Manhattan fleet includes three IHC 4300/Road Rescue Type I ambulances and engines from Pierce and Alexis. They just received their newest engine which is a 2010, Spartan Gladiator Classic, Alexis with a 1,500-GPM pump, and 750 gallons of water. Manhattan received a new heavy rescue last year built by SVI Trucks which was also on a Spartan chassis with an extended, super command, Gladiator Classic cab. The old squad was built in 1986 on a Chevy Kodiak chassis by Marion, and is now owned by the Manhattan Emergency Management Agency (EMA).

When the new Alexis engine was put into service, Manhattan donated old engine 1211, a 1984, IHC/Pierce with a 1,500-GPM pump and a 1,000-gallon water tank to the Hurst Fire and Rescue Department in Southern Illinois.

Beach Park Fire Department is on the site

Beach Park Fire Protection District decal

Another Lake County, MABAS Division 4 department has been added to the site. Formerly known as the Bonnie Brook Fire Protection District, The Beach Park Fire Department covers roughly 14 square miles in northeast Lake County which includes unincorporated areas of the county as well as Beach Park. They do not though currently provide coverage for the entire town of Beach Park as the Winthrop Harbor Fire Department has responsibility for a portion of the town.

According to the Beach Park Village Link Newsletter in the winter of 2003:

The New Beach Park Fire Department

In the last months of 2002, there were plenty of positive changes in the fire protection services for our village. Formerly known as the “Bonnie Brook Fire Protection District”, the name was officially changed to the “Beach Park Fire Department” (BPFD) last November to better define the department’s capabilities and service areas.

Beach Park has a mixture of apparatus in the fleet including Alexis, Pierce, Seagrave, Medtec, and Osage. The newest rig is Engine 1222 which is a 2008 Seagrave Maurauder II engine. Currently, Beach Park Engine 1212, a 2002 HME/Alexis engine is undergoing work at Alexis Fire Apparatus.

In recent Beach Park FD news, they have opened a second station at 13110 W. Major Avenue in Beach Park. This interesting station originated as an existing house with an attached garage. The garage was modified as a lobby and office area and a two-bay addition was then added for the apparatus. At the present time, this station has a crew of two or three which are a jump company, staffing either the engine or ambulance based on the nature of a request for service.

Wheeling FD Opens New Station

As of 6PM today, August 14, 2010, the Wheeling Fire Department is occupying their new headquarters fire station #24 at 499 S. Milwaukee Avenue. The old station #24 at what was the public safety complex, 255 W. Dundee Road, will not house any fire apparatus or firefighters for the near future. This facility will be remodeled so that the fire department can have a small presence within what will be the new expanded police headquarters. Eventually a single company will run out of the 255 W. Dundee Road location to maintain an optimum response to the northwest portion of their district.

Division 1 construction updates

We have been following the progress of two new fire stations in Division 1. Mount Prospect Station 14 on Kensington Road opened several months ago but was not complete until recently when the bay doors were installed. Mount Prospect officials had refused to accept the bi-fold doors with windows on at least two occasions due to a substandard paint job. The building opened with solid doors as mentioned HERE and HERE. Today the station was photographed with the proper doors. As a side note, it appears that a reserve ambulance and a reserve engine are housed at this station which will require an update to the site listing.

The second fire station that we’ve been keeping tabs on is the new headquarters Station 24 on Milwaukee Avenue in Wheeling.  Running about a month behind schedule, the majority of this project has been completed. The station has company quarters including kitchen, dayroom, bunk room and lockers on the first floor while the headquarters space and training room are on the second floor.
