Bill to rename the post office in memory of Captain Johnson

Congressman Daniel Lipinski has introduced a bill to rename a post office in memory of CFD Captain Herbie Johnson. From his website:

To honor a longtime Chicago firefighter who lost his life in the line of duty and to pay tribute to all first responders, U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski (IL-3) has introduced H.R. 3085, a bill to rename the post office in Chicago’s Mount Greenwood community after Chicago Fire Capt. Herbert “Herbie” Johnson. The 32-year veteran of the Chicago Fire Department and resident of Chicago’s Morgan Park community died last year while fighting a house fire on the city’s South Side.

“Capt. Herbie Johnson, like so many of our first responders, served heroically and selflessly. His passing and the outpouring from the community where he lived and served was tremendously moving and inspiring,” Rep. Lipinski said. “My legislation to rename the Mount Greenwood Post Office makes sure that he will never be forgotten.

An outgoing, caring and dedicated public servant, Capt. Johnson was popular and well-liked throughout the Mount Greenwood, Beverly, and Morgan Park communities on Chicago’s Southwest Side. Almost every year he drove the fire truck down Western Avenue for the South Side Irish St. Patrick’s Day Parade. In 2007, he received the state’s highest award for firefighters, the Illinois Medal of Honor, for rescuing several children from a burning apartment.

On Nov. 2, 2012, Capt. Johnson died while battling flames in the attic of a two-story home in Chicago’s Englewood community. He was 54 years old. Capt. Johnson was survived by his wife of 28 years, Susan, two sons, Thomas and Michael, and a daughter, Laurie.

Following the tragedy, Rep. Lipinski’s office reached out to the family, neighborhood officials and leaders, as well as the Chicago Fire Department, to discuss commemorating Johnson’s sacrifice and the bravery displayed each day by the men and women in our police and fire departments. [The] legislation would designate the Mount Greenwood Post Office, at 3349 W. 111th St., the “Captain Herbert Johnson Memorial Post Office Building.”

Capt. Johnson came from a family of public servants. Three of his brothers are Chicago police officers. A sister is a retired Chicago police officer. Another brother is a Chicago firefighter. Capt. Johnson served in almost every Chicago neighborhood as a firefighter, but his heart belonged to the Southwest Side.

“Herbie Johnson was a great friend, an admired and respected leader in the Chicago Fire Department, and a beloved figure in our neighborhood,” said 19th Ward Ald. Matt O’Shea. “Thanks to Congressman Lipinski and this legislation, Herbie’s incredible heart, quick wit, and unique sense of humor will be in our hearts and minds forever.”

Capt. Johnson was active in many causes dear to the Chicago Fire Department. In addition to serving as a mentor to many firefighters, Johnson taught more than 1,000 recruits as an instructor at the Robert J. Quinn Fire Academy. After the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, he volunteered with the rescue efforts in New York City. He also was known to cook for various charity events and offer his time at a camp founded by a friend for young burn victims — the “Bucks for Burn Camp.”

A copy of Rep. Lipinski’s bill and a letter of support from the International Association of Fire Fighters are attached.

Willow Springs Box Alarm 9-16-13

This from Martin Nowak:

8391 Archer Ave. I arrived when crews were venting the roof. I believe that’s what I heard but couldn’t see well. After getting some videos of apparatus arriving, I relocated to take pictures. Here are some photos I took with my phone.

These were the departments that I saw on scene; Willow Springs, Roberts Park, Bridgeview (416 is OOS using 415 “1986 KME/Darley”, Forest View, Brookfield (I believe they returned because I didn’t see their ambulance after they arrived.) Westmont, Western Springs, Tri-State, Pleasantview, Lemont, and Lagrange Park. I was told Bedford Park Engine 711 was there, but didn’t get a chance to see them.

Glenview box alarm for high-rise fire 9-11-13 (more)

The Chicago Tribune has an article stating that the high-rise fire at 3925 Triumvera Drive on 9-11-13 was caused by cigarettes.

Cigarettes sparked the fire in Glenview last week from which a mother and her 14-year-old son had to be rescued, according to authorities.

“The cause of fire was smoking, misplaced cigarettes,” said Glenview Fire Chief Wayne Globerger.

The blaze broke out in a bedroom of a man’s apartment at around 12:30 a.m. Sept. 11, on the ninth floor of a high-rise condo building at 3925 Triumvera Drive. About 40 firefighters worked to extinguish the fire, evacuating every resident from the 16-story building, Globerger said.

Glenbrook South High School student Sungwon Choi and his mother were stuck on a balcony of their apartment, which was adjacent to the fire, and had to be rescued via a 100-foot ladder. The blaze was put out in minutes, and no one needed treatment at a hospital. But the fire caused about $500,000 in damage to the building, mainly affecting two units on the ninth floor and one on the eighth floor, Globerger said.

Most of the residents of the building are back in their apartments, but for some it may take months before their condominiums are livable once again.

Chicago Still Alarm fire 9-14-13

This from Eric Haak:

This fire on the 5300 block of South Justine occurred Saturday afternoon at 1245 hrs.  Companies responding were Engines 116 and 123, Truck 33 and Tower Ladder 39, Battalion 19 along with Battalion 15 and Truck 18 with the RIT assignment.  No rig shots with this one as both engine companies were running spares.  There was some concern about communication to the rear porches of the exposure to the north, but everything was quickly contained.  A resident of the address told me that the mother allegedly stepped out to go to the corner store when the fire was started by kids in the rear bedroom.  During overhaul, the remnants of several mattresses were tossed out the rear window by members of Squad 5.

DesPlaines votes to join RED Center

In a followup to a series of posts about the City of DesPlaines’ discussion about whether or not to join RED Center for fire and EMS dispatch, the Daily Herald has an article about the vote in favor of making the move.

Des Plaines will be switching its emergency dispatch services for the city’s fire department to the Regional Emergency Dispatch (RED) Center, a consortium providing dispatch services for 14 area fire departments. The city council recently voted 7-1 to approve the change in provider. The Park Ridge City Council similarly approved moving its fire dispatch services to the RED Center, as both towns were required to switch services together or not at all.

Des Plaines has been handling its own dispatch services for its police and fire departments since the dissolution earlier this year of the North Suburban Emergency Communication Center, which handled police and fire calls for Des Plaines and Park Ridge, and police calls for Niles and Morton Grove. Des Plaines decided to run the center, which was located on the second floor of city hall, itself for a two-year trial period with Park Ridge as a client.

Fire Chief Alan Wax said during the recent city council meeting that the main reasons to switch to the RED Center for services are an increase in service levels, improved ability for regionalized responses, and cost effectiveness.

Fire calls make up 18 percent of the city’s emergency calls. The switch could mean the elimination of two supervisor positions, and one dispatch position involving five employees (because of multiple shifts) at the Des Plaines 911 dispatch center, and adding two part-time employees, Wax said.

The RED Center is a premier dispatch center specializing in handling fire department calls, Wax said. Its state-of-the-art facility in Northbrook provides call-taking, emergency medical pre-arrival instructions, and fire department dispatching services. The agency, formed in 1977 with five area fire departments, today serves as the regional dispatch center for the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System Division 3, of which Des Plaines is a member.

The center received and responded to more than 37,000 fire department calls in 2012. Des Plaines would be the largest member, with a call volume of 14.6 percent based on 2012 call statistics. The center has 18 employees. The two towns produced 11,000 fire calls last year.

The Des Plaines dispatch center would continue to receive all 911 calls, and route calls that pertain to fire or rescue emergencies to the RED Center.

“Our dispatch, from the time we answer the call until we dispatch units, is within 60 seconds 90 percent of the time,” Clausen said.

Des Plaines dispatchers can listen in to the call so they can dispatch police squad cars where needed, Wax said.

thanks Dan
