Excerpts from the ChicagoTribune.com:
A Homer Glen man and his friend are facing misdemeanor charges after taking an ambulance for a joyride April 26.
The vice president of Vandenberg Ambulance called police April 27 after a mechanic notified him that a sideview mirror on an ambulance was broken. He watched video surveillance showing two men stealing the ambulance, then returning it to the garage, [recognizing] one of the men as an employee, Weston Fabian.
Police questioned Fabian, who admitted taking the ambulance [for three minutes] after he and a friend, Mark Fletcher, watched the Blackhawks game at a bar and then visited two other bars.
Fabian told police that he asked Fletcher if he’d like to see an ambulance, and they went to the Vandenberg garage, where they took the ambulance and drove it around the block. But they struck the building, breaking the passenger side mirror, when backing it back into the garage.
Because Fabian immediately confessed, the owner of the ambulance company opted to show leniency and only pursue a misdemeanor charge, police said.
