Working fire in Gary, IN 4/11/15

This from Eric Haak:

Another busy weekend for the Gary Fire Department.  This was at the corner of 43rd and Georgia Street and was a one-story grocery store.  As you can see in the third image, water pressure became an issue at one point.  Lake Ridge was brought in as an additional engine company so that other Gary resources could remain in place.  While this was an active incident, Engine 8 had a brush fire on the opposite side of town.  Gary companies working this incident were Engines 9 and 5, Truck 2 and Squad 2.

As seen around … Gary, Indiana

This from Eric Haak:

I spent Sunday (3/15/15) in Gary, Indiana and even though I didn’t catch the big one, the day was at least interesting as it usually is in Gary.  Companies were dispatched to a dwelling fire in the 2400 block of Colfax around 12:45.  I was on the other side of town and missed the address so by the time I arrived it was mostly out.  Turned out to be the same vacant dwelling that was burned a few weeks ago.
Truck 2 broke down while en route and had to be replaced with Truck 1 from the other side of town.  With decent light I took a few shots of the responding rigs.  Squad 2 is now responding in the Chevy 3500 that is pictured.  They responded with three in the rig.

At about 2:00, a brush fire came in out in Miller (the far east side of town).  The fire was on a hill that was directly behind an apartment complex.  Engine 7 had to back into a position at the base of the hill to feed a line over a retention wall in order to gain access.  Nothing spectacular but better than nothing.

New fire chief in Gary

Excerpts from the NorthwestIndianaGazette.com

Controversial Fire Chief Theresa Everett will be replaced in a ceremony … sources tell the Gazette. Communications Director Chelsea Whittington informed the Gazette that the mayor’s office would not comment on upcoming personnel changes but sources close within the department say that long time Gary Firefighter Paul Bradley will be named to the top post.

Everett has been controversial since her appointment to the position in 2012. Firefighers stated privately that they believed Everett’s ties to Freeman-Wilson weighed more in her appointment than her qualifications. Freeman-Wilson and Everett are both members of the same sorority. Everett was a finalist for a position with the Fulton County, Georgia Fire Department in 2013. Everett’s future plans were not known at the time of this article.

Working fire in Gary, IN 1-31-15

This from Eric Haak:

The Gary, Indiana Fire Department fought 6 fires within 12 hours on Saturday, January 31st.  This was the last of those fires which was dispatched just before noon and was at 24th and Colfax, just 2 blocks north of Station 13.  There was also a fire at 36th and Colfax in the early morning hours.
Like the other 5 buildings, this structure was vacant.  It was a 1-story, 35×50 frame with an attached garage.  It appeared that the main body of the fire was in the rear section that looked like an addition to the original home.  An initial interior attack was made which knocked down a good portion of the fire.  Companies then backed out and the fire in the rear addition was put out from the exterior.  Also pictured are Engines 8 and 13 as well as Truck 2.

Gary firefighters tolerate interim fire station

CBSChicago.com has an article about the living conditions in an interim fire station in Gary.

Imagine trying to sleep while living above a party-room — and you’re a firefighter. It’s a problem that’s long plagued some of Gary, Ind.’s finest, who earlier this month were called to fight multiple fires in one night.

Fire Station No. 5 was shuttered in 2012. Firefighters bounced from one location to — now — the Calumet Township Multipurpose Center. It’s part homeless shelter. Its engine sits next to a float. It’s connected to a party room that’s for rent.

“A lot of our guys can’t get any sleep,” Gary Fire Department Lt. Kevin Thomas says. “Something needs to be done right away.”

Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson, who calls the situation “substandard,” has just secured a HUD loan for a new home.“We’re looking to do as much as we can, as quickly as we can,” she says.

At one potential building site construction might begin as early as early next year.

HUD to fund new fire station in Gary

The NWItimes.com has an article about a federal loan for a new fire station in Gary

A $6 million loan guarantee from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development will finance some much-needed projects in Gary. The federal funds will pay for the rehabilitation of the Hudson Campbell Fitness Center downtown, renovation of the auditorium and athletic facilities at West Side High School, and the construction of a new fire station in the University Park area.

Gary’s Station 5 used to be based at 4101 Washington Ave. in the University Park neighborhood, but it has been a “homeless” firehouse since 2012, when a contractor found asbestos. The station has since bounced around to different locations in Merrillville and Calumet Township.

As seen around … Gary, IN

This from reader:

I snapped the attached photo during a visit to Gary this past summer.  The station in the picture is a former fire station, #10 I believe that was damaged in a flood several years ago.  Sadly it has been abandoned and left to rot. A sad display of the total mismanagement of that city.  The living conditions inside some of the other stations are pretty bad too. Vehicle breakdowns are a matter of routine and there are few if any spare rigs.  Their story needs to be spread so that the media gets involved and tries to get some answers from the Mayor and fire chief.  They are co-conspirators in the mismanagement of that department.
