Several injured during Kankakee fire, 4-13-16 (more)

2-Alarm fire with a 3-Alarm EMS Box for apartments over commercial fire with rescues at 894 W. Station St. (radio traffic is a condensed timeline) from radioman911.com – Audio by Broadcastify

Excerpts from ABC7Chicago.com:

Two brothers, ages 2 and 4, were critically injured in an apartment fire in Kankakee. Their 55-year-old grandmother, a 22-year-old woman, a 25-year-old man and a firefighter were also hurt. Investigators are trying to pinpoint what caused the three-alarm fire. They said it started in a rear stairwell, blocking some escape routes. Firefighters had to make several rescues.

Justice Ward, 4, and Ju’shaun Ward, 2, are struggling to survive. They were airlifted to University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital and Loyola University Medical Center. They were both trapped inside a second-floor apartment as it burned. The boys’ mother and seven of their siblings, including an infant, made it out safely. Their grandmother suffered smoke inhalation and was transported to Riverside Hospital in Kankakee. She told a relative, Harold Williams, about those frightening moments.

“Kids was hollerin’ and screamin’ because, you know, they didn’t know where they was. So they had to feel through the smoke to try to get them out of there. So luckily the fire department came and kind of saved their lives,” Williams said.

Firefighters arrived at the scene just before 2 a.m. Wednesday. The building, located in the 800-block of West Station Street, has two businesses on the first floor, eight apartments on the second floor and 22 residents.

“Upon our arrival, we had heavy smoke from the second story with numerous victims from numerous windows on the second floor,” Kankakee Fire Chief Ron Young said.

The 25-year-old man jumped from a window. He was rushed to Riverside, where he’s being treated for burns and a fracture. The 22-year-old woman was also taken to Riverside for burns. A firefighter had minor burns on his face. He was treated at the scene.

“All of the doorways to the apartments fed into a single hallway, so they couldn’t go out the front door to get out. That’s why they went out windows,” said Chief Ron Young, Kankakee Fire Department. “I’m proud of my people. I am proud of their professionalism and their courage.”

Working fire in Park Ridge, 2-18-16

Park Ridge firefighters responded to a house fire at 105 Elmore Street Thursday morning 2/18/16. RED Center received a call at 7:43 am reporting a fire with the possibility of two trapped occupants and dispatched the fire immediately as a Code 4 for the working fire. Within minutes a neighbor reported that the residents were out of the house. Park Ridge Battalion 35 arrived and reported heavy fire in the rear with an exposure on each side of the fire unit.

Companies made quick work of knocking down the fire and containing the flames. The residents were treated at the scene after inhaling smoke but both refused transport. Mutual aid to the scene included Rosemont, Niles, Des Plaines, Morton Grove, and the North Maine FPD.

Chicago 2-11 Alarm fire, 12-21-15 (more)

More from Steve Redick at the 2-11 Alarm Fire at 3057 N. Rockwell 12/21/15

This from Steve:

a video of the series of images I shot at the time of collapse

And the from Steve:

3057 N Rockwell Monday night. An occupied commercial building with an operable sprinkler system. I arrived just after the first 2-11 units and observed a moderate smoke condition. They did have the sprinkler system siamese supplied, and based on fireground traffic felt the sprinkler system was doing some good. Members put a lot of effort into removing the glass block windows in the front of the building. Conditions soon changed and the fire advanced throughout the building. There was a sudden collapse as the snorkel was being positioned. No damage to members or rigs.
A note with these images and video. I did not have my usual camera equipment with me so this was all shot on an Iphone and an old digital point and shoot. The quality is not up to my usual standards, but lousy photos are better than no photos right?

Chicago FD radio traffic – November 2015

This from Eric Haak:

I came up with this idea a few weeks ago and wanted to share it with the readers.  I thought it would be interesting to hear the highlights of radio traffic for CFD all in one spot so I put together this synopsis of events for the month of November (2015).  I also finished one for June and July which can be heard on my Youtube page.  I intend to finish the other months that are available on Broadcastify and if I get enough positive response, I hope to keep it up.  I figure once I get caught up it won’t be hard to just keep up by adding the events as they happen.  I will then hopefully be able to share a month’s highlights within the first couple of days of the new month.  I am still playing around with the format but I think I am going to stick with this for now.  It will be still & box alarms and higher but excluding the obvious.  No still and box alarms for people trapped unless bonafide.  No still & box alarms for high rise fires unless the incident warrants a clip or the traffic is interesting.  And obviously no stand-by alerts at the airports.  I hope you enjoy listening.
