Excerpts from Newschannel20.com:
In Dawson, firefighters conducted a 9/11 ceremony dedicating their newest squad truck. The back of the truck reads, “keep back 343 feet” in memory of the 343 firefighters who lost their lives at Ground Zero.
Fire Chief Mike Abbott says the new truck can be operated by just one person who can fight a fire from inside the cab. He says it means a lot that the community provided the fire department with this new piece of equipment.
“It makes me proud. I mean, looking around here and seeing the neighboring fire departments who responded to help us welcome this apparatus, as well as seeing the community members that showed up in such short notice. It makes you proud to be not only a citizen of the community, but an American,” Abbott said.
A push-in ceremony was held to place the truck inside the fire station. Abbott says the ceremony goes back to the days of the horse drawn steam engine, where firefighters would have to physically push the steamer back into the station.
