Prescribed burn in Busse Woods, 3-31-15

It’s the season for controlled or prescribed burns, so I followed a huge header Tuesday afternoon (3/31/15) to the Busse Woods Forest Preserve where the Cook County FPD Resource Management firefighters were burning in a large field. I walked in and stayed for about 45 minutes as they moved through the area. Here are some images from the burn area of what’s called the Nature Preserve on the north side of the Salt Creek.

I spent Sunday (3/15/15) in Gary, Indiana and even though I didn’t catch the big one, the day was at least interesting as it usually is in Gary. Companies were dispatched to a dwelling fire in the 2400 block of Colfax around 12:45. I was on the other side of town and missed the address so by the time I arrived it was mostly out. Turned out to be the same vacant dwelling that was burned a few weeks ago.

Truck 2 broke down while en route and had to be replaced with Truck 1 from the other side of town. With decent light I took a few shots of the responding rigs. Squad 2 is now responding in the Chevy 3500 that is pictured. They responded with three in the rig.

At about 2:00, a brush fire came in out in Miller (the far east side of town). The fire was on a hill that was directly behind an apartment complex. Engine 7 had to back into a position at the base of the hill to feed a line over a retention wall in order to gain access. Nothing spectacular but better than nothing.

Huntley FD was dispatched to Normady and Bordeaux Dr for a brush fire when crews arrived they reported a very large brush fire and activated MABAS box on brush box #5-960A. The following companies due are (2) Huntley Engines, Cary Engine,Huntley Tender, Huntley Brush, Hampshire Brush, Union Brush, Lakewood Brush, Huntley Ambulance, Huntley Battalion Chief, Huntley Chief, Algonquin Chief, Huntley Safety, Wildland 4 – COQ: Station 1: Carpentersville Engine, Crystal Lake Ambulance: Station 3: South Elgin Engine and Genoa Kingston Ambulance

Large brush fire in Hammond

CBSChicago has a brief article about a huge brush fire last night in Hammond:

Firefighters in northwest Indiana responded to a “large brush fire” Saturday evening off Interstate 94.

The Hammond Fire Department responded to the blaze about 8 p.m. off I-94, between Indianapolis and Kennedy avenues, according to Indiana State Police.

The blaze was under control by 9:30 p.m.

Grass fire 4-7-14, Fox River & Countryside FRD

St Charles Eng 103 and Brush 101 were dispatched to 4000 W. Lincoln Highway (route 38) for a possible brush fire. While en-route Engine 103 reported a header in the sky … they arrived and reported 10 acres of brush going and moving rapidly westward. Chief 112 arrived and requested brush trucks from Batavia and Geneva. Elburn’s chief arrived and requested two brush trucks and a tanker from Elburn.

Fox River and Countryside (FRC) was also dispatched by Kane County … they were already on two other brush fires at the far northeast end of their district. Eventually they would arrive with both of their engines, a tanker, and two brush trucks.

When FRC arrived, they took the west side of the fire to protect exposures to a large barn, house, and several out buildings. FRC’s tanker would fill Elburn, St Charles, and their own brush rigs several times to bring the fire under control. Turns out the fire was in Fox River and Countryside’s district, the address was 39w962 Route 38.

Large grass fire in Grayslake, 4-9-14

Here are some photos I took of the large brush fire today, (4/9/14) in Grayslake. Happened near Rt 60 & Behm Lane. Numerous acres involved, multiple departments were called to scene and for change of quarters. Took an hour and a half to completely extinguish the fire and clear the scene. I also have a picture of Mundelein Ambulance 431 at Grayslake’s Station #3 change of quarters across the street.

Wheeling brush fire 3-31-14

It’s that season again … RED Center received several calls late Monday morning about brush fires in Wheeling near the Union Pacific railroad tracks from 444 Carpenter all the way north to Lake Cook Road. At the same time, they fielded calls for additional fires along Bond Street in the Long Grove Fire Protection District near Lincolnshire and Buffalo Grove. Buffalo Grove companies were also handling fires near the tracks as far north as Route 22.

The railroad stopped all trains from passing through and had another train that had recently gone through the area stop for inspection.

All fires were out within a period of about 90 minutes. Here are some images from the largest of the fires. This was behind 250 Carpenter Street, south of Dundee Road.

Wauconda 3rd Alarm brush fire 5-1-13

Here are some photos of the unincorporated Grayslake 3rd alarm brush fire that happened in the area of Chardon Rd & Imperial Court on 5/1/13, called for the 2nd alarm at around 2:35 PM and then third alarm on box #34-70 at around 3:05 PM, box was struck out at around 4:05 PM. I couldn’t get the best pictures because LC Sheriff had Chardon Rd blocked off. I also included a photo of Grayslake Fire Station #3 (Although its not the best picture). Photos by me (Sam Borcia).
