Mike – Following up on your comment about rebuilding an old engine and putting it in a new chassis – I don’t think any manufacturer would be willing to put an old/rebuilt engine in a new chassis. In addition, I’m sure there are specific legalities from the EPA. I like the idea, I just don’t see it happening.
In terms of the 2027 emissions, the Cummins 10L will fit on current Seagrave cab/chassis with just some minor modifications. The X15 is a huge motor and will not fit on a Seagrave cab/chassis. The weight of the X15 is also much greater than the current X12.

I hope they do. Right now, only thing advertised with the X10 is up to 450hp 1650tq. Which is 50hp and 50ftlbs less than the X12. But the X15 is up to 605hp and 2050tq. Plus the weight difference in the engines themselves. Also torque curve. I get all that. We have a midmount tower with the 600hp 1850tq X15. I wouldn’t want anything smaller.

Wouldn’t be surprised if CUMMINS dame out with a 500hp version of the new 10L. Engine technology has come a long way. Look about much power and torque these new generation pickup truck engines produce and on top of that less cylinders and/or displacement too.

I’m curious to see what seagrave does with the new 27 emissions laws. Seagrave doesn’t offer the Cummins X15. The L9 and X12 are being replaced by the new 10L. But with less hp and torque than the 500hp X12 which is in all the aerialscopes. Wonder if they will figure out how to accommodate the X15.

Pent up demand. That’s generally what drives up prices.

Rusty- Almost all the manufacturers have had to do this recently. There’s tons of news stories all across the country of this happening. None of the manufactures ever expected materials to go as high as they did in such a short amount of time. If they absorbed all those costs, they’d be out of business. Its a crazy messed up world out there. FJB

Dennis–Truck 2114 is a 2022 Sutphen, but you are right, it will be interesting to see what gets replaced when the new engine arrives.

Mike C. My thought was find an old motor and have it completely rebuilt and using that in a new apparatus. Plenty of older engines out there in wrecked Vehicles. You just put it in the spec that you are supplying the engine. Kind of like back in the glider days when they would take the motor trans and rear axle off the old apparatus and transfer it to the new one.

Mike – What is your intent with a non-emission motor? The 6V92 Detroit’s served most very well. The S60 Detroit, also a good motor. As emissions changed, they became a little more complex but if you got an S60 without DEF, those were good motors too.

Blue Island has 3 Engines and a Truck.
Engine 2103 1994 Sutphen
Engine 2123 2008 HME
Engine 2133 2007 HME
Truck 2114 2014 Sutphen
I’ve heard that the Sutphen engine has been great but there was some issues with the HME’s so it will be interesting to see what if anything is replaced.

They have two Sutphen rigs:
Truck 2114–a MM tower
Engine 2103–reserve engine I believe; I think it was bought second-hand, but I am not entirely sure. My guess is they will get rid of this one when the new Seagrave arrives.

I wonder how Seagrave is handling the contracts? The few in the area they have sold, they went back to the customers asking for more money when the trucks were close to being done. I have not heard of any of the other manufacturers doing that. Do they just build the truck to spec then give the customer a price @ Final Inspection? The City’s that had to pay more were put in a real tough spot. Pay 10-15% more for your truck that was already contracted for one price, then if you don’t agree you can cancel the order and order something else that will take another two years to get. Anybody hear of any other manufacturers asking for more money after the contract was signed?

Mike C. They did get a new sutphen recently. I wanted to ask you about the 2027 emissions. What are your thoughts about getting an older non emission motor and doing to complete rebuild: sleeves, pistons, head(s) etc. build a zero mile motor with no emissions and have no problems. Thoughts?

Apparatus sales seem to remain high. With the high pricing on apparatus, what’s driving so many orders? COVID money from the feds? Perhaps trying to beat the 2027 emissions??
Did Blue Island get a Sutphen recently? I wouldn’t think Blue Island will see the new Seagrave anytime soon but it’ll be well worth the wait.
