Thanks Harry

The “EMS Field Supervisors” are actually Paramedic Field Chiefs and are the rank equivalent of a Battalion Chief.

Harry, Amb 80 was a BLS ambulance. All the BLS ambos were changed over to ALS rigs, and all renumbered, so, yes, there was an Amb 80, but it was renumbered, now being Amb 61…
#4 by Bill Post on July 7, 2018 - 2:39 AM
Harry the Chicago Fire Department ran a fleet of BLS ambulances from approximately mid June of 2000 until late September of 2014. The 15 BLS ambulances were changed to ALS units and renumbered in consecutive order with the 60 ALS ambulances.
When the BLS ambulances started at 80 and went as high as 94. When they were converted to ALS ambulances they became 61 to 75. Ambulance 61 was the former Ambulance 80 and they are still at Engine 112 and Tower 21’s quarters at 3801 N Damen. EMS Field Supervisor 452 and Command Van 272 are there.
It’s interesting that of the 8 District EMS Field Supervisors not all of them are located with ambulances. Field Supervisors 455, 456, and 457 are not quarted with ambulances.

I believe there has been an ambulance 80 for years at tower 21 house

Sebastian, these are not just swap of new rigs. This is adding 5 new ambulances # 76-80. They do not exist now, hence adding them requires new medics to man them
#7 by Sebastian on July 6, 2018 - 8:24 AM
I’m not understanding why more medics are needed to roll out new
Ambos? Yes i understand that medics would need to train on the new rigs but wouldn’t they need to just swap rigs??? Like they did with the new engines or towers?? Or did they hire extra ff’s just for the new rigs?? I’m really confused..
#8 by Marty Coyne on July 6, 2018 - 7:50 AM
Chuck, not sure how you got the number 92. Figuring 4 shifts x 2.37 medics (instead of 2 per shift, we add the extra) gives just under 10 medics (9.5 to be more precise) per rig for 4 shifts. Times that by 5 and you have about 47 medics needed for the 5 new ambos.
They have some classes in or coming up and are supposedly going to open the list again soon. They do need medics for this but not as many as you think.
#9 by Chuck on July 5, 2018 - 9:55 PM
Bill, they do not have anywhere near the manpower necessary to put those rigs in service. There is a manning formula somewhere that says you need 2.37 people per position (or thereabouts,) to cover the shifts. 5 ambulances X 4 shifts X 2 paramedics X 2.37 means they would need a minimum of 92 NEW paramedics to cover JUST these rigs. They just can’t detail out from Fire Suppression to man these rigs.

The CFD really must be short of paramedics since the 5 new ambulance companies which were supposed to go in service at least 4 months ago are still not in service despite it being the summer when there are more outdoor activities, let alone the potential of having heat related emergencies. It’s also been several years since any new ALS engine or truck companies have been put in service. In the early 2000’s the CFD was putting ALS companies in service at an average rate of about three a year.

Larry, please stop being an arm chair qb on the posts regarding
The CFD!!! Does it really matter what pattern the lights are??
Or what rig gets the new one or not?? Please let the pros handle it.

Ah… ambulance 20 is the closest to me… I hope to see this on the streets. Looks pretty nice besides the pin wheel pattern. Are there more coming in soon?

The Ford behind looks like one of the four 2013 remounts. Ex ambo 10 was just sold at auction so it’s one of the other three. Can’t tell for sure but the grill looks black would make it ex ambo 30. The other two had chrome color grills.

Yes. 2006 or 2007 model on its way to 103rd & Stony Island, no doubt.

In the picture of Ambulance 34, is that a Ford F Series ambulance in the background?
