At around 4 p.m. the Arlington Heights Police and Fire departments responded to the area of Derbyshire and Euclid avenues after a garbage truck powered by compressed natural gas partially exploded.
Debris was scattered along the street as a tow truck prepared to remove the garbage truck. Two police officers and one firefighter were injured by flying debris and sustained a “post-blast concussion.” All three were transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Authorities said it’s believed that one of the compressed natural gas tanks on the truck exploded. Truck parts landed several blocks away, and a shockwave caused substantial property damage to nearby homes.

Milton waste management has a lot of CNG trucks in their fleet. There are also quite a few big trucks that are CNG, so they’re out there. I read online that it wasn’t the trucks CNG system that failed but it was something discarded in the collection area that blew off. Bigger vehicles are really dangerous, LAFD had a LODD due to a tire on a construction machine failing with a FF in the immediate area. Thankfully everyone survived this and the damaged equipment can be fixed or replaced and everyone can use this as a learning tool for the future.

That could have been worse. Just stick with gasoline and diesel engines. Not sure how common this is with natural gas engines CNG or otherwise. Then we know how BEV’s like to catch fire without warning.
