This from Bill Post:
There is a news headline that Truck 56 and Ambulance 46’s bay door is out of order. They are parked out during the day while at night it sounds like Truck 56 is at Tower Ladder 23 (Engine 108) and Ambulance 46 is at Engine 79. They don’t know how long it will be before they get the parts for repairing the bay door.

Rich S. is correct, but most of the bigger door repair companies DO have parts in stock (cough cough…first hand knowledge). If the specific springs aren’t in stock, then they can pretty much get them in a day or two. Most also have those exact door sections in stock, can cut them down to length and put in the same day. It comes down to those companies being paid on time…or at all by the City! For those of you waiting 5 months for doors, well, those are probably the nice fancy ones, or the newer high speed sectional doors. A standard door painted red from the factory will take 5-6 weeks.

Wayne, thanks for the 2FM clarity.

While not ideal, FDNY has built chain link fence enclosures outside of houses having their floors renovated. The apparatus is secure and the company is kept in it’s primary area.

Okay guys, here’s the deal. The vendor that the city uses for all doors doesn’t carry parts because the city doesn’t pay in a timely manner. They also charge around $3000 for a panel to be replaced. Truck 56’s door has a broken spring and cable so the door cannot be manually opened and closed (not to mention it’s not lite!). As a Captain I have requested several repairs to my house and the city is not fixing stuff. The Captain of 89 was originally told the door is outside the budget for 2023 to be repaired. Now it’s parts are on order…. Bottom line the City doesn’t take care of the facilities as it should this is not the burbs!!!! there are literally hundreds of installations and most are 100+ years old and falling apart. It’s very sad to say the least

Engine 55s garage door broke a couple months back. They had to switch it to the battalion bay and used a wood plank to keep the garage barely halfway open for the chief to get out. Took months to get it fixed

If it is a spring and the size isn’t one that let’s say Menards or door supply carries then it will have to be special ordered. Special orders are taking longer.

Can’t they just manually close and open it? Not ideal, but surly that is an option. I find it very hard to believe that nowhere in the midwest has spare parts for this.

2FM hasn’t existed for years. Lori Lightfoot merged the IT department of the city with 2FM and created Assets and Information Services, AIS, who are in charge of fleet, facilities, and IT services.

Bill, F2M is Facilities & Fleet Maintenance. City agency responsible for all City buildings and vehicles.

Contractors are not the issue. There still are delays on doors and door parts .

Are contractors not being paid? There is way more to this that’s not being talked about. They can ship parts overnight if needed.

What’s an F2M Truck ,Chuck?

There is a delay in doors. We ordered an overhead about 5 months ago, should be here in January. As for parts that’s the main issue. I’m actually surprised that there aren’t spare parts laying around.

Also saw an interesting thing today on an F2M truck – “Department of Assets Information & Services” – what 7 figure consultant came up with the idea for that nonsense?

Yet another feather in the cap of the City’s administration and highlights the continuing absolute indifference to the Chicago Fire Department. What possible delay could there be in finding parts for an overhead door? And why isn’t fixing this a priority?
