wayne franklin pk il fd i know carries bunker gear and scba on there ambulances and they are ford e series and the chevy express like a lot of depts have told me if you have to fix the newer diesels it is much easier to take the hood off the ihc or fl than take the whole cab off the ford f series diesel chassis

Following up on Mike C’s comment, I think it may be fair to say that it would be hard to justify the expense involved with most of the new vehicles posted on this blog. With the current state of the economy and everyone chomping at your wallet, how much longer can the taxpayers of IL continue to fork out this kind of dough? I’m not knocking these particular ambulances, but just making a generalized statement in these unprecedented times.

It would be hard for me to justify the additional expense of these chassis’ but they are nice to have.

Perhaps the thinking of using a medium duty chassis is that they will last longer per the same duty cycle. Hence less cost over the longer term vs. the higher purchase price.

Dan as much as I agree with you, there is a huge difference in storage that a van or minimod ambulance has. Right off the bat if you need your ambulance crews to carry bunker gear and SCBAs you’ve pretty much eliminated both of those style ambulances. Especially if you want adequate space for those items. I definitely agree that these medium duty chassis are severely overkill though.

Well it can vary among private services. You have to remember there are countless non emergency transports that the private operators perform so they may no need all of the extra space and equipment.

It always amazes me that fire departments get these huge ambulances while private ambulances that respond to emergencies have vans or much smaller modular ambulances and they do the same thing.
I guess when you are spending taxpayer money, who cares about the cost.

Very sharp! Looks very similar to the previous ambulances.
