  Yeah. Usually they just hire the whack jobs and promote them multiple times. And if they’re drug abusers, they get their stuff swept under the rug. And heaven forbid you have an actual problem the job might be responsible for, they’ll send you for an exam and when the report comes back with fault found on them the dogcatchers MD’s at Medical will tell FD personnel there’s nothing wrong with you. And forget using EAP. If they’re not threatening the individuals with the issues with their jobs (like they did the sexual abuse complainants a few years back,) they’re violating your confidentiality by telling Personnel and Medical everything you ever talked about for as long as you’ve been using them. This is not your father’s or grandfather’s or great grandfather’s Fire Department, where issues got handled in the basement or out in the alley. And it was a better job when it was.

  At least nobody was hurt. Obviously it had a good outcome not having someone who behaves that way on the department.

  And some individuals still question why polygraphs and psychological exams are required just to take exams prior to being hired / appointed . this is a excellent case in point !
