A fire engine rolled onto its side after colliding with a minivan Thursday morning in Palatine around 9:30 a.m. at the intersection of Palatine and Quentin roads. The minivan had major front-end damage after the crash
It’s unclear if anyone was injured in the crash

I was in the area today and stopped and took a look at the engine. It’s heavily damaged and the guys there already said it’s totaled. The cab is bent and the frame is bent badly. Overall the rig held up well and the guys were safe.

palatine will be getting a Pierce Enforcer 100ft rear mount tower to replace the quint, the current tower will go to reserve.

I am guessing they will get a stock unit if there is one available that will meet their needs. I believe Pierce has several stock Enforcer engines that might be a fit for Palatine.

mike c yes without a doubt i know they wont fix that because the frame is likely bent the cab is bent and the engine is 15 years old
i would be willing to bet mike c they will get another pierce as long as they like them and it keeps you complaining about another pierce then its all good

Hope all involved heal quickly!
Mike – The underside looks pretty clean! Looks to be stainless!
Hairy – This rig will be written off. No way it’ll be repaired.
The last rig Palatine bought didn’t have a the independent front suspension. I’ve never been a fan for the independent suspension on fire apparatus.
Palatine isn’t quints the same was as they did in the past. ALS quints were ridiculously expensive to keep going. Assuming Palatine orders a replacement, it’ll be interesting to see what they get since lead times on new apparatus is lengthy unless they find a stock or demo unit.

Harry, this was the reserve engine. I worked in downtown Palatine for several years recently (not at the fire department). I saw these rigs quite frequently. There was a marking on the cab, indicating the rig designation. This one does not have it (as Jeremy pointed out).
My intelligent guess, assuming the Pierce E84 is still OOS, is that 84 is probably running the reserve quint temporarily.
Michael–I believe the agreement is known as RPM, so there is a real good chance Rolling Meadows will loan them something, if needed, especially if RM has multiple reserves. I have not been out that way in several years.

I wonder if they will have to make an emergency purchase and what they will get. Maybe another Pierce? They got the new E 84 in 2019 and the new E 83 in 2021. I wonder why they decided to go back to standard engines, maybe the 04 and 09 Quints did not work out for them?

cmk 420 i did an internet search and yes it was the spare for sure because if you look at the lightbar it has the opticom built in on the reserve but 82 does not and and the grill is differant on this one than 82
and as for the ambulance i dont have the picture anymore due to losing it after a car accident in nyc in october but last winter i had a picture of a newer ihc ambulance and it looked like 83 old one which was the one involved in the rollover crash but what makes me think it was fixed and kept for a reserve is because it had no number like 81 or so on but when i go there soon i will maybe see it so hopefully i can follow up

That sucks, if this was their reserve, that’s not good. I though it might have been E82. I can’t see any of the markings. With the agreement they have with RM, maybe RM will loan them the old E16.

i think this is there reserve

It was running as Engine 84, they were enroute to a call in Palatine Rural’s district.
I’m really interested in seeing how this accident played out. To get to the call they were responding to, they were most likely going south on Quentin Rd or made a turn westbound Palatine Rd onto south on Quentin Rd. Either way, this means that both vehicles did some form of a 180, and the engine rolled after the spin.
I saw that there were 2 transports, hopefully they’re all doing well.

In a case like this I think some of the other surrounding departments would offer palatine the use of a spare engine. I think Rural uses the tanker as their engine when the engine goes down. Maybe, Bartlett will borrow them one, their chief was a palatine guy before he went to Bartlett and they still have the rigs the Roaenbausers replaced.
Hey Mike C. Look how clean the underside is too…lol..?

Harry–I don’t think they repaired A83. I could be wrong, but I don’t remember for sure. They bought a new one to replace it. One of the two Fords that is a twin to A84.
Looking at the markings (or lack thereof), as well as what was at the scene, I would speculate that this is/was the reserve engine that was running front-line as either E81 or E84. This, obviously, puts Palatine in an interesting spot. No reserve engine, only the reserve quint that doubles as a reserve for the tower ladder.
They have a strong relationship with Rolling Meadows & Palatine Rural, so some type of sharing agreement will probably be in place until something new is purchased.
I watched the YouTube video of this & you are right, that was pretty bad.

From what I was told Everyone is ok, not sure about the van driver though. The engine is a total. The cab is damaged severely and looking at the pictures from underneath the frame is done also.

hope all the ff are ok it looks to me the van ran into the engine not the other way around i assume that engine will be totaled looks like they will have a third pierce engine this is palatines second rollover in recent years a83 roled a few years ago
