Does anyone know if the city will add additional ambulances to the fleet?
#2 by Mike C on December 12, 2021 - 8:45 PM
Harry, based on a large procurement like such, most, if not all CFD ambulances will be replaced within a short period of time. Just seems odd that CFD would opt for Type 1 and 3’s. After all these years of buying 350’s I’m surprised they’re going with the 450’s.

Why would the rear chevrons be different?

Thanks for the info Tim you’re definitely right about all that!!!! I’m not sure but
I think that many years ago the Fire Service Inc owner started in a shop on 113th and Cicero in Alsip……

Interesting to see that the E-Series are getting rumblers. That’s a first for Chicago.

Mike Hellmuth, the Rev Group doesn’t operate like that. They have more money than God so it’s easier to have their local E-1,KME, Wheeled Coach, Road Rescue etc. guy do it. The owner of Fire Service used to be a mechanic for American LaFrance in University Park many moons ago.
Bob, you’re right. Those pinwheel patterns are ugly, but the lights are “reprogrammable” and the flash pattern can be changed without changing the light.
Harry, I’m with ya. I hope Amb 145 and 329 get new rigs also.

Hope they get rid of those hideous pinwheel lights

I’m thinking a large sale like this would be a house direct sale not an individual
sale………

Mike, your math is way off. The City would have to replace the entire fleet 3 times over in 5 years to buy 250 rigs – that is just NOT happening. Secondly, 200,000 per rig seems lowball, even with the City’s desire not to have all the usual bells and whistles of a suburban rig. What I’m surprised at is the no MBE and WBE in the contract – usually the City is sticklers for that stuff. And how do they say these are “local manufacture”?

Glad they are keeping up the Ambulance fleet! They let the 2007’s go too long frontline.

Mike. CFD had all F series Braun ambo’s until 2013. The only firehouse that did not fit an F-350 was Engine 99’s house. The ambo 86 renumbered to 67 when they went all ALS used an old 90’s McCoy Miller Type 3 until they got one of the new Wheeled Coaches.
The Dodge Rams were an experiment because the Type 3’s were not holding uo and they didn’t want diesel. You could not get the gas engine then in the F series. Now they can and have gone back to Ford. The Rams did not work out well.

I don’t think they’ll ever go back to those RAM chassis. A couple years ago an CFD member personally told me that the RAM’s were garbage as soon as i asked him how they were. Mostly suspension problems. So FORD is probably all they will buy for the time being.

Marty they have been ordering both E series and F series and have a few dodges also. Some firehouses aren’t big enough to fit an F series or dodge in them. So the E series still works. I’m surprised that since EMS doesn’t do fire suppression that they aren’t looking at Type 2 vans again.

Mike the contract is up to that amount. They are not obligated to buy that number and just like the agreement with E-One will almost certainly never come near the highest amount listed.

So they’re going to order both Type I and Type III? The last 4 ambulances bought by the city were 2 – F450’s, 1 – E450 and 1 F-350. Interesting.

This should be a good pay day for the salesman.. just doing quick math at 200,000 per ambulance it’s 250 ambulances. I have to say this is pretty smart on the part of the city. The costs of materials over the next few years is going to go up a lot, just like the last 10+ years costs have risen.
