During the incident, a bicyclist and another vehicle were struck in the 2200 block of West Division. The bicyclist self-transported to St. Mary Hospital with minor injuries. The ambulance kept going and ended up crashing in the 0-100 block of North Boulevard, near North Astor Street. The suspect was placed into custody and charges are pending.

All of our ambulances have a switch that when activated allows you to remove the keys and keeps the motor running. Most every police car I’ve seen has this featuer as well. Very inexpensive especially if installed at time of manufacture.

Thereās three keys for every ambo, one in the ignition, and one for each medic with a fob so it can keep locked. Lots of stuff plugged in on the ambo not to mention climate control for the patient compartment. And no one was there, it seems unfair to armchair quarterback the crew when it might not have even been an error on their part.

Rigs are left running, and in most rigs the keys are attached.

I am sorry, but is there a reason why they cannot take they key out of the ignition at the hospital? I takes about 2 seconds to do this.
Was it extremely hot outside and they needed the air conditioning on while they were in the hospital?
This was just pure laziness on the part of the driver.

Is there a reason why they left the key in the ignition? This is a different world. The driver should be taking the key in their possession. Obviously the neighborhood is not great, so why take the chance? This is a totally preventable incident!

First time they unlocked to load a patient and a guy jumped in the front and took off. The medics thus did not get in trouble. Ironically the city had cheaped out and declined the $100 option to be able to unlock the cab and box separately. Not sure what happened this time.

They need to start using the Club (steering wheel lock) when the ambulance is unattended. LOL
