Harry,
You obviously have no fire service experience and are uneducated when it comes to the operation and function of a heavy rescue squad or the history and concept of OLFD Squad 1. You also sound like a typical politician supporting the idea of utilizing a cheap throwaway vehicle that is too small, not equipped or staffed properly for it’s intended use and function.
The issue here isn’t about maintenance and this vehicle drastically lacks the purpose of it’s intended use. Squad 1 was a fully staffed and fully equipped heavy rescue. It was utilized as manpower squad for working structure fires, not only in Oak Lawn but also on box alarms in the First and Second Districts (MABAS Divisions 21 and 22). Many departments depended on this highly equipped vehicle with it’s talented crew. It responded to complex extrications, technical rescue and HAZMAT incidents. It was a valuable asset that is long gone, thanks to ignorant politicians who only see $$$$! The privileged guys assigned to Squad 1 were some of the best and most experienced firefighters many of us were lucky enough to know and learn from with the reputation of getting anything done. Now it is nothing more than a glorified EMS chase vehicle with very limited equipment and a crew of 2.

Mike Mc, The previous fire chief had roots in the St Louis metro area and was all about the quint concept. The title “Truck” was brought back by the new chiefs. It’s tradition in our area to call all aerial apparatus trucks.

Not directly related to the photo, but does anyone know why Oak Lawn’s Quint 3 is now called Truck 3 on the radio? It’s the same rig. Thanks in advance.

The pick up with the dually was auctioned off some time ago.

What happened to the dually they were driving?

I can understand that a big squad or rescue can haul more equipment and more people but overall I think it is fine

Oh, Harry….. don’t comment on that which you have no knowledge of. This was never a good idea for Oak Lawn or any other department that lowers the service it provides.

Agreed, what was once an awesome vehicle, now riving around in a service vehicle….Gotta love politicians….Not….

more and more dept are doing this not just oak lawn think it is less wear and tear on the vehicle and roads and far easier to get into tighter spots and also if it snows bam its got a plow so I see it as a win win heavy rescues and or squads are far more costly

I believe this vehicle used to be Service 21, a 2013 Ford F-350.

That is an insult to the history and the men who were assigned to squad 1. Thanks to Sande and Larry and George for running. Oak Lawn into the ground.
