The only major difference between the F450 and the F550 is the weight it will hold. While yes the F450 is “sufficient” for a box, departments are starting to go to the F550 with the thought being it will hold up longer. I believe Batavia is replacing 51 and 52 which were F650’s or 750’s. Maybe Albert knows for sure. The reason the F450 and F550 are becoming more popular is simple…….cost. They can hold a type I box and cost far less than an International or Freightliner. They are easier to service and more facilities available for service, a lot more Ford dealers than International or Freightliner dealers around.

Hey Mike…we just purchased two ambulances that were going to be built on the F-450 chassis. However, one of them had to be built on a F-550 chassis because the dealer couldn’t get another F-450 chassis for several months. I’m not a mechanic but there doesn’t appear to be much difference between the 450 and the 550. Hope this helps!

It seems as if the F-550 is becoming more and more popular for ambulance use. I thought the F-450 was sufficient for most ambulance bodies. Can someone explain the ever changing trend?
