If I”m correct this new Engine would probably be assigned to station 53 which is both the newest and the northern most station in the fire protection district. Until recently the Truck/Quint was assigned to station 53 on Woodland avenue however the were moved to Station 51 (headquarters) on Schelter road. That was a smart move in my opinion as Station 51 is more centrally located within the district and is located in between Stations 52 and 53 where the Engine companies are located. As far as the Squad goes it is to my understanding that it is a “Jump company”which to means that the crew on duty would either have to respond with the Truck/Quint or the Squad.
I do know that the Squad is due on quite a few MABAS boxes on mutual aide outside of the district.

FYI…Both Notre Dame and Mackinac Island each have a HME/RAT. After testing rigs from competing companies, NDFD went with the RAT due to tight turns on the campus and limited firehouse space. It replaced the 1993 Pierce Dash. The 2004 Alfco Metro (also short wheel based) is now the reserve engine. The 2014 HME/Mini-Evo serves as a 3rd engine and tow vehicle for their boat and rescue trailer. Compartment space is not as critical for NDFD since they don’t carry extrication equipment and only limited BLS supplies. They rely on South Bend for ALS and ambulance transport. Nearby Clay Fire Station 21, can provide Tower Ladder coverage and additional ALS transport should the need arise.

Yes, Turk_WLF THAT IS a Warning & Scene light Combination of Whelen (Engineering). They are available with the red top or clear top for uses with other color LED lighting . There are a number of these popping up on the newer SMALL van style ambulances.

Remember they also have a Squad, they can get away with having a smaller engine. The ladders are stored through the tank according to the drawings.

According to the HME website it has a 1250 GPM pump, 500 gallon tank, 140 cubic feet of storage space, 500 cubic feed of space in the hosebed. It seems like they are giving up a lot of compartment space for maybe more versatility. It does appear that this truck is more maneuverable on city streets compared to a standard engine. Will it meet their need, I don’t see why not, as long as it has a EMS compartment in the cab, which it does. Remember 90% of all fire department calls are EMS.

My question is does the new rig have the same hose length capacity as the rig that’s it’s replacing. In appearance it appears that it wouldn’t have the same capacity , so I wonder what are they giving up for the new rig?

Where is the other half?

To answer all of your questions.. Exept for why they ordered it.. Go to hme’s website and look up their RAT series trucks..

Why is it so short? Do they have tight streets or small stations?
#10 by MABAS 21 on August 10, 2016 - 9:50 AM
Are the required compliment of ground ladders stored in the rear and what sizes? What hose capacities are in the rear bed? What size pump and tank?

Anyone know why they bought this?

I wonder what that red and white item is (It appears to be a Warning Light) between the top of the front & the rear cab doors?
Thanks,
