This from Danny Nelms:
Hera are a few pics a member of my Facebook CFD group named Michael Frederick came across from a Holiday Inn in Nebraska on the night of 3-3-16 of one of the new squad 2nd pieces. no info on who took them though.

The city would’ve been better off just rechassising the snorkels onto commercial bodies instead of waiting this long. Do 1 snorkel at a time and the reserves. Especially for just 2 men riding in the truck.

Is engine 9 still using the spare or have they finally got their eone back from the shop?
#3 by Brian on March 7, 2016 - 1:25 PM
Any chance the current snorkels get sent out and rebuilt? Or atleast the current reserve snorkel (squad). Use the current rigs as spares and one by one rebuild them? Could be a crazy thought and not how the city works but seems to make sense.
#4 by mike on March 7, 2016 - 4:18 PM
If it makes sense it won’t happen.

When will the new squads be delivered? Theses squads have been a long time coming. It will be interesting to see how they ultimately end up working out.
#6 by Rich S. on March 6, 2016 - 11:42 PM
Unfortunately we run all of our rigs into the ground before get new ones. we are still using 1985 towers as spares and they are better than the newer pierce rigs we have.
#7 by Rich S. on March 6, 2016 - 11:39 PM
This would be a huge loss if it doesn’t work. we have needed new squad rigs for five years now. boxes have fallen off and had to be rebuilt by the shops to put a new sub frame on and put back together we only have one spare box rig and one spare snorkel and they are used as much as a front line rigs. these new rigs are years in the planning and making and waiting. even if sqd 7’s rig is not good the others are still coming and going to be put in service. they should have just re chassied the HME’s and the spare E-One snorkels and gotten new box rigs.

If there is a fire in any of the parking garages a conventional lead out would be used, they haven’t used the mini for garage fire for a few years now. also there are no two piece engines in the city, even at the airport because per the labor contract if a vehicle has a pump on it it must be driven be a engineer. not like the burbs.
#9 by Drew Smith on March 6, 2016 - 10:39 PM
It is assumed that since this is the first one anyone has seen that it is the first one. It very well could be the second, third, or fourth vehicle of the order. Only time will tell.
#10 by 9 man squad on March 6, 2016 - 9:59 PM
It is possible the current 7a will be a second piece to a current engine for parking garage fire only.
They may also only be getting the Rosenberg “snorkel” for seven as it is the slowest squad and If it doesn’t work it is nothing lost nothing gained. They can then get smeal snorkels for the other squad if this is a failure.

Thanks for the good info Rich.
#12 by Rich S. on March 6, 2016 - 9:09 PM
The new box and snorkel will be the rigs they will have and use. no jump companies. Sqd 7’s current response district will remain the same. very many politics go into the boundaries to many for them to change for just a rig. also remember these are not real snorkels so who knows how they are going to work out for us.
#13 by Rich S. on March 6, 2016 - 8:58 PM
The squad boundaries will for sure remain the same as they are now. It’s a huge undertaking to change the response boundaries. The mini pumper has not really been used in the parking garages it has just been what they had as a second piece. They had no choice but to rehab the pierce box rig it was falling apart literally. so that rig will most likely be just a spare for Sqd 7
#14 by 9 man squad on March 6, 2016 - 6:26 PM
Of course this is only speculation until they are delivered
#15 by 9 man squad on March 6, 2016 - 6:19 PM
This could just be a second or third piece for the current pierce box that was recently rehabbed. Having the mini pumper for airport responses and the snorkel for city responses
#16 by Brian on March 6, 2016 - 5:34 PM
Does the mini pumper 7a serve a purpose in the parking garages? Not sure how it is operated beyond being the 2nd piece of the squad.
Will the new combo mean squad 7 coming out of ohare more than it does now?
#17 by Rich S. on March 6, 2016 - 5:30 PM
The mini pumper is probably going to be scrapped. And the current operations and configuration with remain in effect for the squads in the CFD. Two FF’s in snorkel and three FF’s and an officer in box rig. The airport probably paid up front for the rigs. That’s why they get the first ones.
#18 by 9 man squad on March 6, 2016 - 4:01 PM
So they are gong for a snorkel at o’hare and not the mini pumper.
Will the mini be reassigned or just scrapped

The drawings RJ linked are different than the ones David linked. Davids drawings are what the cab looks like
#20 by Brian on March 6, 2016 - 2:21 PM
The cab does not extend as far back as the drawings show. The cabinet is closer to the front of the rig than the drawing shows as well.
#21 by Rj on March 6, 2016 - 1:41 PM
Theres only 2 guys in the “A” or snorkel now. The balance of the crew and the officer are generally in the other unit.
#22 by Brian on March 6, 2016 - 10:54 AM
What s the current response configuration?
#23 by David on March 6, 2016 - 10:45 AM
To me the cab looks 100% the same as on the 1st of the original drawings:
http://chicagoareafire.com/blog/2012/12/chicago-fire-department-orders-new-squad-units/
Also any ideas why the 1st rig will be delivered to O’Hare and not the much busier city Squads?
#24 by Marty Coyne on March 5, 2016 - 9:53 PM
I guess these are going to be two seat rigs after all. That’s gonna change the squad companies response configuration.
#25 by Ffpm621 on March 5, 2016 - 6:03 PM
The stretch behind the front wheel was taken out. Look at the drawing and look at the actual cab
#26 by Ffpm621 on March 5, 2016 - 3:23 PM
Being in Nebraska I would bet its headed to RK to get the boom put on.
#27 by Mike C on March 5, 2016 - 2:38 PM
Certainly, doesn’t look like the cab in initial drawing. What’s changed?
#28 by Rj on March 5, 2016 - 3:13 PM
Yes they do. http://chicagoareafire.com/blog/2013/01/chicago-orders-new-squads/
